How to download torrents anonymously with uTorrent (VPN and free Proxy setup)

2588 ratings | 571331 views
Learn how to download torrents anonymously and use utorrent anonymously with a VPN or proxy service. We show you exactly what we mean by the term "anonymous" vs not anonymous when downloading torrents. The truth is that your torrent IP address is easily viewable by all peers sharing the same torrent as you. That's we recommend that all Bittorrent users use an anonymous VPN or proxy service (or both would be better) In this video, we use Private Internet Access VPN (VPNTopten.com's editors choice 2014 best torrent VPN) You can learn more or sign up at: http://www.vpntopten.com/pia We use PIA two different ways to totally anonymize utorrent traffic using first a proxy server, then a VPN (and actually use both simultaneously with two different IP addresses). Advantages of Private Internet Access for bittorrent users: - NO Logs. No activity tracking. - NO Throttling - Unlimited Bandwidth/Speeds - Torrents Allowed - VPN Kill Switch (Prevent accidental IP leaks) - DNS Leak Protection (Blocks windows security leak) - Servers in 12+ Countries - 256-bit Military Grade AES Encryption Learn more about PIA: http://www.vpntopten.com/vpn/private-internet-access Watch our PIA Video Review: http://youtu.be/jB9XjjSIurQ Learn how to use Vuze Anonymously with a proxy/VPN https://youtu.be/7Y4hhvfo0dA Other tools we feature: Torguard's Check my Torrent IP Tool: http://www.vpntopten.com/checkip Additional Questions: If you have any questions, please make sure to leave them in the comments. While coonnected thru PIA vpn and proxy together on utorrent when I use my "checkmytorrentip.png" , the IP address keeps changing randomly not being stable as same like PIA assigned ip address. Everytime I update tracker the proxy ip is not same.
VPNTestDrive (3 months ago)
I've had that happen when using the SOCKS proxy from other providers like torguard, because they use a server cluster with multiple IP's. Though a stable proxy connection shouldn't really change IP's often. My advice would be to check the IP shown with a site like iplocation.net to see what country they belong to (not yours hopefully).

Please help me!!! my Utorrent is not letting me update my tracker and it says proxy connect error!!!!! i trusted you to get PIA and it's not even actually working
VPNTestDrive (3 months ago)
That usually means you're not using the right login/password combo for the proxy or you have a proxy setting configured incorrectly, or you connected to the VPN after the torrent client was already open. PIA's proxy works great when setup properly.
Mitzz (5 months ago)
available for Android ???
VPNTestDrive (3 months ago)
If you mean Private Internet Access, yes it is available for android and works great with popular android torrent clients. You can also use the proxy functionality inside Flud or tTorrent if that is your preferred torrent App.
TenderAce (5 months ago)
So step 1 to the last step is implying then that you have to have PIA VPN, regardless?
TenderAce (3 months ago)
I tried using a free VPN for torrents... BUSTED. PIA is the one that works however it slows down my internet
VPNTestDrive (3 months ago)
Any VPN that allows torrents will work. This guide was created using PIA VPN because it is one of my personal favorites and an incredibly popular choice for bittorrent users.

It says connecting to peers 0 0
VPNTestDrive (6 months ago)
Use the VPN instead of the proxy. Some ISP's block proxy port 1080
Dirt Nassty (7 months ago)
I have a quick question, my "checkmytorrent" in the trackers section of utorrent doesnt let me force update tracker, that option is grayed out! Do you know why this is?
VPNTestDrive (6 months ago)
It only lets you update that traffic every minute or so if my memory is correct. Otherwise it autoupdates every 15 minutes.
Dirt Nassty (7 months ago)
Best tutorial for the same setup I use! Thanks alot!
iamcarpetpython (8 months ago)
I currently have a VPN (through privateinternetaccess, and connection settings are same as this video for the VPN application). Is it really necessary to set up the proxy settings for my uTorrent application, or is it currently protecting me from my ISP seeing my torrent activity?
VPNTestDrive (6 months ago)
No you don't need the proxy. It's completely optional. Most people use the VPN only, and it works great.
Daniel Roy (8 months ago)
'si always go back to your Video why ? many are so confusing still not answering my question your very good at this but theres only one thing :) your site for this Video needs a little update thats it does not match with the new page they done beside that keep it going with your teaching ok ? :)
Johnj_es_1010 (8 months ago)
well iam having a problem iam checking my ip adress and its still showing even if iam applying my vpn or proxy to utorrent so whats the issue here ?
VPNTestDrive (6 months ago)
It still shows AN ip address, the goal is to see the IP address of the proxy/VPN, not your own IP address.
Haroon Javaid (9 months ago)
How can i go to the clinet panel??
VPNTestDrive (6 months ago)
Go to PIA's website and log in. You need to have an account with them. If you don't have a PIA subscription, you obviously can't login.

How does Peer Block work in comparison? Better? Worse? Same?
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
Peerblock does nothing to actually encrypt your torrents or change your torrent IP address. All peerblock does is attempt to block millions of 'suspect' IP addresss from connecting to you as torrent peers. It doesn't work against DHT or tracker scraping, and any person/company who's IP is blocked by peerblock can instantly get a new one with a VPN, proxy, VPS, etc. I believe it gives a false sense of security that does little but reduce your available peers and speeds. So far not to impressed with privateinternetaccess.com. Have not gotten my credentials after having paid for it. I opened a support ticket and immediately got a canned response saying that their support volume is higher then normal and they apologies for the delay. Odd their auto reply works so fast but the email confirming your credentials doesn't. I will keep you posted as to weather this site is valid or if i have to fight to get my credentials or money back.
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
I've certainly never heard of that issue with PIA before, and they literally have 100's of thousands (if not millions) of subscribers. My best guess is that you signed up with a throwaway email address (or accidentally entered the wrong one) and didn't realize that they email your credentials to you. If you signed up with a valid email address, check your promotions/spam folder.
Andre Racicot (10 months ago)
hello i would like to know is this true that has a window of time to download it as for uttorent or bittorent or tell me which proxy is good or a vpn thanks
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
A VPN is better and more secure. If that doesn't answer your question, please ask again.
Kamima Lungu (10 months ago)
My network uses a proxy address that i have to enter into internet options, how do i configure PIA for such
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
If your network requires a specific proxy to reach the internet, then you can't use PIA for it. If you can use ANY proxy to reach the internet then you can configure PIA's proxy in your browser using this chrome extension:https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/proxy-helper/mnloefcpaepkpmhaoipjkpikbnkmbnic?hl=en

do you think PIA would be better than nordvpn?
balancefirst3meters (1 month ago)
Thanks a lot.
VPNTestDrive (1 month ago)
I'd also add that PIA works when sideloaded onto a firestick (if you have one) whereas NordVPN currently does not.
VPNTestDrive (1 month ago)
It depends on your priorities. If you want the ability to change encryption strength for faster speeds, choose PIA. If you absolutely have to have Netflix (and other geo-restricted streaming service) access, then choose NordVPN. Also NordVPN is slightly cheaper if you take advantage of their 3-year deal. https://go.nordvpn.net/SH1M6
balancefirst3meters (3 months ago)
So what you're saying since I'm kind of reading between the lines is that NordVPN is better?
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
Most people have the best results with VPN-only. Some torrent clients ignore proxy settings and will leak your IP. Also, some torrent/proxy combos may make it hard to open magnet links for some reason.
shayed (11 months ago)
got caught while using proxy only.. fuck proxy
Leviy Yisrael (6 months ago)
As of this date is it still recommended to use both a proxy as well as a vpn together or will using them both together cause a conflict which will leak the ip address?  Also should the enable UPnP port mapping box continue to be unchecked or should it be checked at this time?
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
Some torrent clients ignore proxy settings or only use them in one direction so an IP can still leak to peers. We currently recommend always using a VPN (and you can use VPN+Proxy for added privacy).
Bulfwyne09 (1 year ago)
I'm personally using CyberGhost and verified my Utorrent IP and my Browser IP are not the same as my actual IP address .. I'm wondering if that's enough to keep third parties from tracking me to my actual IP address ?? Or is a Proxy Server needed ?? And if i'm using a device that is connected to a homegroup Router, will what I typed above ever be Hidden from my Router as well ?
VPNTestDrive (9 months ago)
Cyberghost VPN is enough, you don't need a proxy. Yes your data will be encrypted before reaching the router, so a network administrator should not be able to read your traffic.

ll the steps were easy to follow untill......... the client panel page? so where is the client panel? how did you manage to come up with that page without telling us how you got to get that page?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
After you subscribe to PIA you simply login to your account on their website. If you don't know how to get to the account panel then you don't have an account.

VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
PIA is not free. You may be able to find a free SOCKS 5 proxy in a list online but it most likely won't be stable, secure, or trustworthy.

Phil8719 (1 year ago)
Excellent guide, I followed it to set up uTorrent with a proxy (without VPN) and it's working well. I just have a question about some of your settings in uTorrent. I noticed you had some settings disabled which are enabled by default such as local peer discovery and bandwidth management (utp) - is there any reason for me to disable these when my connection seems to be working properly?
Phil8719 (1 year ago)
Thanks for the reply. I only torrent on my home network but disabled local peer discovery anyway.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You can leave bandwidth management on if you like. Local peer discovery should be turned off for security reasons. If you only torrent on a private connection (at home) it won't make a difference but if you use it on large networks (school, public wifi etc) it will find peers on that local network, and they will see your REAL local IP address, not your VPN/proxy IP.
14Afcfan (1 year ago)
Is there a free alternative?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
There are some free SOCKS5 proxies online. They will of course keep logs, be slow, and suffer from frequent disconnects. They may also snoop traffic and try to steal passwords. You should be suspicious of anything that should cost money which you can get for free. Don't use an HTTP proxy, you'll think it's working but peers will still see your real IP address.
Tiva 11 (1 year ago)
hey , i'm using expressvpn and don't allowed me to torrenting plz can you help me and thanks for the video
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
My understanding from talking to ExpressVPN support is that they do allow torrenting. If it's not working for you, contact their support team. If they tell you that torrents are not allowed, then switch to another torrent-friendly provider like PIA.
Josh (1 year ago)
Hi will this work for Mac?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes, PIA has an App for Mac as well as windows and Linux. It even can be installed on an Amazon fire stick. Also, the SOCKS5 proxy protocol works on an hardware that supports it, including Mac.
jamie hardy (1 year ago)
i can't seem to download using a 3g connection and yes there are peers and trackers and i do have internet access i already know that mobile services block p2p so i just would like to know if there is a way to bypass their firewalls or what not and be able to download using 3g
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Using a VPN is the only way I know of to get around ISP torrent blocking. It will probably be quite slow at 3G speeds, but should work.
misterskeleton (1 year ago)
dude you are a god. i already had pia, but my speeds were garbage compared to w/o vpn, but now i followed your settings and my speeds are balling ty!

Hi I really don't want to purchase membership from PIA ... just using uTorrent setup like you mentioned sufficient?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
It's impossible to setup utorrent as shown in the tutorial without having a subscription to a SOCKS proxy service. You won't be able to connect.

Steve (1 year ago)
What is the one you would use for WINDOWS 10 64 BIT ? I am In Canada. I would prefer free but what can you do lol
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Basically all the VPN apps are 32-bit so you won't get an advantage by having a 64-bit OS. Unfortunately there aren't any free VPNs that allow torrenting. PIA is pretty much the cheapest zero-log provider around. You can also try the big discount on 2-year plans from NordVPN: https://go.nordvpn.net/SHOv They are a zero-log provider, netflix-compatible, and have torrent-friendly SOCKS proxy servers in over 12 countries (PIA is Netherlands Only).
Ken Davies (1 year ago)
I,m a OAP and even for me I found this video easy to follow, (having been with PIA for a few years) my speeds have rocketed skywards since doing this. I,m very grateful thankyou so much.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You're welcome Ken. Happy torrenting!
jackfavvv (1 year ago)
I downloaded the file to see if my IP displays, and the Trackers says, "HTTP Error 403". If my IP doesn't display, does that mean I'm safe?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Actually that error more likely means your proxy isn't setup correctly.
aFaceInside (1 year ago)
I'm still holding out for the ultimate "anonymous" communications & delivery method/design, aside from unplugged, of course. I envision whatever Peer file sharing method is used it will run isolated within Linux virtual sessions that simulate physical world/internet connections (routers, servers, etc..) as well as include all the perks of encryption, VPN tunnels, proxy, firewall, etc... the works! ;)
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
There is the i2p network which is kind of similar to what you're describing. It's free, but it's REALLY slow
Abul (1 year ago)
You're too loud!
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
SORRY! haha
lost1403 (1 year ago)
You recommend not using UPnP in the video. Has this security flaw that you mentioned been fixed? Would it be safe now to use UPnP port mapping?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes this vulnerability is several years old. If you are running the latest firmware on your router from a reputable manufacturer, there should be no issue. If you use the VPN option without the proxy, you don't need to enable upnp.
Trey Ezernack (1 year ago)
So my internet provider still shouldn't see me downloading torrents if I'm only running a VPN but no proxy?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Correct. The VPN alone is plenty secure.
Azad Dipu (1 year ago)
I did exactly what you showed but now it's saying that proxy connect error vpn closed by peer. What can I do know?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes, the VPN by itself is very secure. It changes your IP address & encrypts your entire internet connection. The VPN by itself is much stronger than the proxy by itself. Using both together is completely optional.
Azad Dipu (1 year ago)
I was trying to use proxy and For that setup my utorrent exactly how did yours. But I couldn't do mine like that.So I had to use vpn.Now I am using VPN.But the thing is it secured? If I want to download something from internet is this safe to download stuffs using VPN?
Azad Dipu (1 year ago)
I didn't understand exactly you are asking me to do.Could you please explain it more details?
Azad Dipu (1 year ago)
Thanks bro.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You probably connected to the VPN after the proxy was already connected. If you're still having issues, use VPN only, no proxy. Proxy is optional if VPN is activated.
19rulesdude (1 year ago)
Just wanted to thank you. I signed up for PIA two years back for $30 annually with your discount after I received a 'notice' from my cable company. I followed your instructions to a tee and did not change my torrenting behavior and have yet to receive any more notices (knock on wood). I've had a couple of hiccups with PIA but nothing major. I'm probably a lifer now using a VPN. Thanks for the simple utorrent tutorial.  I'm computer illiterate and know nothing about proxies and socks and servers ...etc.
Football Zone (1 year ago)
Use purevpn for torrenting.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
PureVPN keeps logs and doesn't include a SOCKS proxy
Skeu74 (1 year ago)
Hi there, thank you very much for the fantastic video. I started using PIA a few days ago and its working good. But even though I am doing everything you said in the video I cant make this proxy on utorrent work. In tracker list tab, where I should see my IP torrent, Im keeping getting the message : proxy connect error : offline(timed out). also the option "update tracker" does not work for me, its always in gray color.  can you help? thanks.
Skeu74 (1 year ago)
ok thank you very much
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
The most common reasons for that error are: 1] people forget to generate a separate username/password for the proxy, 2] a mistake in the proxy address settings in utorrent, 3] make sure to start the VPN before opening utorrent, otherwise it will cause an error. If you've done all these and still have issues, then my advice is just use the VPN only. The VPN is quite secure by itself (and is the setup recommended by PIA). Turn on the kill-switch for added peace of mind.
Shaun (1 year ago)
curiouse about this one. so i did all as described then copied a free online vpn search engine website address into the required space. slow speed in this case (right now at least). I have no idea at all if it functions though.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
So it sounds like you're using a 'Free' proxy server you found online? Is that correct? You can test if it's working using the ip tracking torrent featured near the end of the video. Make sure to use a SOCKS proxy, not HTTP, because HTTP proxies can't handle torrent connections and will leak your real IP.
Jenny Z. (1 year ago)
UTorrent stuck at 0% downloading. Is this due to my server or can my settings have something to do with it? I'm new to this.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Some people have reported trouble with magnet links when using a proxy. Usually if you download the torrent file manually it will start. If it still doesn't work then you probably have the settings configured incorrectly (proxy address, username, password, port). The easiest fix is just use the VPN, no Proxy. I recommend Netherlands or Switzerland server location. I think canada works too. If you don't choose a torrent-friendly location, PIA will reroute torrent traffic on their end, slowing the connection.
jr rj (1 year ago)
at 6:48 - why can't i see my ip address, under trackers. No problems downloading file though.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You may have to widen the column to see the full tracker status.
Angel Anthony (1 year ago)
Do you have a video step by step in doing this to download torrents? That'd be really helpful.
Murat Aksu (1 year ago)
Thanks for the video. The thing is uTorrent is not downloading 200kb that torrent which you showed on the video. I'm using Mac, entered correct user name and pw, did everything what you did but nothing changes. Am I missing something guys?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
The tracking torrent never actually downloads. It stays at 0%. The only purpose is to show you your torrent IP address from the perspective of a tracker.
bonjourq (1 year ago)
I installed PIA and set it exactly as you showing and it work perfectly, however 10 sec after i open Utorrent i loose my internet connection completely. this issue seem coming from Socks5 proxy configuration i generated my username and pass and connected to 1080 port and checked all the boxes below. what am i missing that disconnect my internet connection when i start Utorrent ?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
A VPN is the best tool I have found to improve torrent privacy. Nothing can be guaranteed 100% anonymous, but a VPN is quite close and far better than using something like peerblock.
bonjourq (1 year ago)
no i am in Canada and using VPN to get anonymous torrent. like i said imputing manual dsn seem to solve the problem, will this keep me anonymous ?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Are you in a country or network that tried to block VPN use?
bonjourq (1 year ago)
yup my internet goes down for some reason, after trying various things i noticed it has to do with DSN,if i go to my windows Networking tab, select the TCP/IP v4 and input manual DSN things got better , but i am not sure about how manually input DSN number affect my privacy
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
It affects your whole internet connection, not just uTorrent? That's strange. I would recommend removing the proxy setup and just using the VPN. It's quite secure on its own.

Angel Anthony (1 year ago)

VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Here's a really good guide on setting up a proxy, as well as how it compares to a VPN: https://www.vpnuniversity.com/bittorrent/torrent-proxy-guide
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Sorry, to clarify: The Socks5 proxy server is included with every PIA VPN subscription. But it's still a paid subscription. If you can find a free SOCKS5 proxy server, then you follow the exact same settings with your free service. Don't use an HTTP proxy, because they do not work correctly with the bittorrent protocol, and your peer connections will be routed outside the proxy tunnel and expose your IP address.
Y2Juan ʕ•ᴥ• ʔ (1 year ago)
Followed this guide for Qbittorrent version 3.3.10, worked like a charm! Some settings were not exact since it's a different program, but still worked and I am downloading a movie now! TYVM!! <3

love the video. I don't use Utorrent but used your tutorial to get me going on qBittorrent and used your affiliate links as well. Thanks for the tutorial. Everything is working fine and I can finally download with peace of mind.
KingdomCloudStrife (1 year ago)
Hmm i followed the same instructions for the proxy setup on BitTorrent and i am using PIA but the tracker doesn't register my configurations. Guess i'll use the vpn only. But very informed video.
KingdomCloudStrife (1 year ago)
oh i see only a select few work with the configurations. Still the Vpn does do the job well by itself. It would consume more bandwidth
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Some trackers don't work properly with the proxy setup. The VPN by itself works great, and that's actually the setup recommended by PIA's tech team (though maybe they just don't want you using double the bandwidth by combining both).
PsychoTech ARMS (1 year ago)
hmm. wonder if this works with qbittorrent
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
It does and we recently made a video on this topic. The Qbittorrent video uses a different VPN service, but you can just substitute your PIA login details: https://youtu.be/Z_pt5tJG7C8
ManDroid (1 year ago)
So, you need to create an account and pay for the membership at Torguard, correct?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
The 'Check your torrent IP' torrent we used from Torguard in the video does not require a subscription. Private Internet Access VPN is a paid service however.
loboblast1 (1 year ago)
Thanks for the video. I signed up for PIA for a year. Does this also mean I'm protected using wifi at home and using a program like Popcorn time for Android??
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
PIA will change your public IP address and encrypt transmitted data for any programs, as long as you're running the VPN on your device. You will want to download the Android app. Some people get confused and believe that running the software on their PC will protect their entire network. You may want to use the kill-switch option in the software, because VPN technology isn't quite as stable on Android as it is on PC/Mac, and connections drop more frequently.

I just subscribed to the service, but looks like there is no "DNS leak protection" option in the client anymore, can somone help with this?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Judging by some posts in the forum: (https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/comment/44443/#Comment_44443) it looks like PIA may have temporarily removed the DNS leak protection feature because it was causing connection errors and other problems. DNS leaks shouldn't be a problem for torrent usage, but if you're very cautious, you can specify your own preferred DNS servers on your router's settings. Then test for leaks at dnsleaktest.com
Lakers280 (1 year ago)
Hello I had a couple of questions in regards to VPN. 1. If I strictly opted to use VPN would I have to still use all the steps for the proxy to use it in Utorrent or do I just use the steps starting from 9:00 of the video before starting Utorrent/Chrome. 2. if I strictly opted for the VPN, would I then have to make any changes within Utorrent then. 3. What would you recommend or say is the best/most flexible VPN for Bittorrent/Utorrent any versions of those to torrenting clients. Thank you
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
1. You can use the VPN only. The proxy step is completely optional (some people like to use a nearby VPN server, and use the proxy for a Netherlands torrent IP). 2. If you use only the VPN, there's no need to change any utorrent settings. You shouldn't use the 'Forced' encryption option in the utorrent settings, because it will just reduce your peers, and the VPN adds much stronger whole-stream encryption. 3. PIA and IPvanish (http://www.vpntopten.com/vpn/ipvanish) are the two providers I recommend the most. IPVanish now has a socks5 proxy included also, and the proxy username/password process is exactly the same as PIA. IPVanish costs about $30 more per year but is faster and has much nicer software. If torrenting is your only VPN use, might as well save the money and stick with PIA.

DNS Leak protection isnt an option for Private Internet Access =O
iwillavengeyou (1 year ago)
+VPNTestDrive I am running v.65 so i guess your right about them taking it out on the newer version
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
I'm currently on version .62 for PC, and it still has DNS leak protection. Perhaps you're on a more recent version? If they disabled the option, then I would assume PIA has moved to 100% full time DNS leak protection. You can use dnsleaktest.com to verify that your setup is not leaking DNS requests. If it's not, then no need to worry about the option.
iwillavengeyou (1 year ago)
Yes i am in there. Are you currently using PIA pc version? The options i have in the advanced connection settings are as follow: . Connection Type Remote port Local Port Request Port Forwarding (unchecked) PIA MACE (unchecked) VPN Kill Switch (checked) IPv6 leak protection (checked) Use small packets (unchecked) Debug mode (checked)
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
PIA does have DNS leak protection. You have to go into the 'advanced' software settings.

So if i am understanding this tutorial correctly, once you've got your sock5 connection configured, when you also add in the VPN connection, the sock5 address keeps its IP address assigned by the proxy server, NOT the VPNs address?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
That is correct. The Proxy connection is 'inside' the VPN tunnel, so your connection goes from your router > VPN > proxy. Torrent peers will see your proxy IP address, and websites you visit will see your VPN IP address.
Faaiz Ibrahim (1 year ago)
Hey mate, so I had Peerblock installed and running also. I followed all your instructions. When I went to torrent, utorrent stalled at "Connecting to peers 0.0%". Did some googling and found out disabling Peerblock did the trick. Would you recommend uninstalling Peerblock? Otherwise, I've subscribed to PIA and your instructions did the trick. Thanks for the thorough how-to, much appreciated!
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes, peerblock is basically useless. It provides a false sense of security without actually improving your privacy. This is especially true if you are already using a VPN or other anonymization technique. Peerblock just blocks massive IP address blocks. It's not targeted, and it's not accurate. If you used every available blocklist, you would actually block more than 30% of all IP addresses in existence.

Thank you!
Great video :) just a few questions if you wouldn't mind good sir :) (1) If Iam running the PIA VPN as software though the computer not though the router do I need to have port forwarding checked or is it strictly optional. (2) The PIA server you connected though was Switzerland does it matter if it's a different server or is it better to have the PIA server set to Switzerland/Sweden/The Netherlands. Thanks again for the good work good sir :)
VPNTestDrive Thank you again very much for your help :).
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
If your speeds are much slower when you run both VPN and Proxy together, you'll be better off just using one or the other. Using the VPN with the kill-switch enabled (no proxy) will probably yield the best speeds/results. You can use a well-seeded torrent from linuxtracker.org to test your speeds. They're able to max out my connection.
VPNTestDrive Thank you very much for answering my questions :) Sorry to bother you for two more. But can having both the VPN and proxy on together actually slow down the torrent download I seem to be getting slow speeds for torrenting around the 150Kb max. And do you know where I can get a current test torrent for speed and ip location test because I have tried most of the one and nothing gets downloaded even after leaving it alone for 15 minutes. Thanks again for all your Help :)
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
1 - You don't need to enable port forwarding, torrents work perfectly without it, and turning it on can create security issues. 2 - I recommend Swiss/Swedish/Netherlands servers because they are the most torrent friendly countries. If you're using the socks5 proxy in addition to the VPN then it doesn't matter which server location you use because your final IP will be based in the Netherlands. If you use VPN only, and use a non-torrent friendly country (like the USA) PIA actually routes torrent traffic to a safer server behind the scenes. In my experience, you will get faster speeds if you just pick a good server location from the start.

I just signed up for pia for one year when I am connected to pia I can't watch videos on Amazon video our on Netflix can you help me fix this
Kristen Wunderlich (1 year ago)
PIA sometimes works when I put it on after starting Amazon Video. Netflix won't work at all when I have on PIA.
iwillavengeyou (1 year ago)
+0 Subscribers i was thinking the same because if youre watching netflix, isnt there nothing to really hide
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Unfortunately many VPNs are blocked by those two services (due to licensing restrictions). For a while PIA was trying to workaround the issue, but they recently released a statement that they will no longer be compatible with Netflix. As far as I know, the only VPN still working correctly with Netflix is NordVPN.
tahu1235 (1 year ago)
so if im torrenting with both a wired and wireless connection with a proxy on my utorrent I do not need the vpn kill switch option on at all? My IP address will be safe regardless?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes, the proxy function is built into the uTorrent software, so it doesn't matter what your external connection type is. You can keep the ip-check torrent active at all times just for peace of mind if you want (to quickly check your current IP from the 'trackers' tab)
Matt Selander (1 year ago)
halp! im not the most tech savy human on earth. i followed the video to the letter purchased PIA and now uTorrent cant find peers. please help.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Make sure you have the proxy settings exactly correct and are using the proxy login/password (not vpn login/password). If that's all setup correctly and you still can't find peers, then disable the proxy and use only the vpn.
John Michael Compay (1 year ago)
Do i still get tracked even tho im using a private wifi?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
The IP address of your personal wifi conection is visible to any tracker/peer listening to that file.
Corey Francesca (1 year ago)
Any tips on using this with Comcast who blocks ports 1080, 1085, and 1090? I contacted PIA today after my connection just would not download torrents, and they said you shouldn't be using the VPN simultaneously with the proxy. My connection works fine the vpn client running and setup the same as in the video. My real IP is hidden (verified by whatsmyip and the checkip torrent tracker address) and my traffic I'm assuming, is now encrypted, so I don't think there's anything else to worry about, right?
Corey Francesca (1 year ago)
Thanks! Appreciate it!
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
yes, the VPN setup alone works great. That's the option most people choose. The proxy does work just fine with the VPN on. PIA support probably doesn't recommend that option mostly because you're using double the bandwidth and the security benefit is largely redundant (using VPN alone is as good as VPN+proxy in most situations).
James Smith (1 year ago)
In the New version of PIA setup (v63) there is two more setting you do not talk about they are 1 use small packets 2 debug mode thanks for any info or help on this and the text support is unbelievable. Jim
James Smith (1 year ago)
thanks for the info did you see the NEW version 65 they also add pia mace and it now says request port forwarding? thanks for any help on this. Jim
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
The 'use small packets' option may give you faster speeds under certain conditions. It lowers the 'MTU' size for the VPN tunnel (minimum transmission unit). There is no risk to enabling that option, so feel free to enable small packets and see how your speeds compare to when it is disabled. PIA's support says this option is most useful when you use PIA on your mobile device, or if you have it configured in a VPN-compatible router. Debug mode will create a local log on your computer to help troubleshoot any problems you may be having. PIA doesn't log any connection information on their end, so this feature is very helpful if you're experiencing connection issues. You would enable debug mode, then share the debug logs with tech support and they could troubleshoot your problem. Feel free to ask any other questions if you have them!
Bob Adkins (1 year ago)
It's pronounced "micro torrent".
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You are technically correct, but nobody calls it that. Even the author of the program calls it 'you torrent': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%CE%9CTorrent#Pronunciation
Dodongo821 (1 year ago)
Do you know if I have to set up the proxy? Or is being connected to a vpn server enough? I just bought a year of PIA and I want to make sure I'm being protected.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes using a VPN is extremely simple but also incredibly powerful. 1 click will fully encrypt your internet connection and route all traffic through whichever VPN server you choose, changing your IP address (from the perspective of all websites, peers, and programs you connect to).
Dodongo821 (1 year ago)
Thanks, just to clarify though, all I need to do is right click and connect to a server to be safe with a vpn? It seems too easy to be true. I've also set up a proxy for uTorrent, does that mean I accidentally turn off my vpn before uTorrent, I'll still be safe?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
VPN only with kill-switch enabled is very secure, and is the default setup for 90+ percent of PIA bittorrent users. I just like to show the proxy as another option for additional privacy, but it is not necessary.
Christopher Hirsch (1 year ago)
Hey bro, I watched your video and I really loved it. I'm using a VPN with proxy to torrent now. However, when I have both the VPN and the proxy, I can't initiate a download. So I turned off the proxy just to get the file to show up, then turned it back on before confirming the download. Am I doing something wrong?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
If the proxy disconnected mid-download, it wouldn't expose your IP. uTorrent would simply fail to connect to the internet (because all connections are routed through the proxy).
Christopher Hirsch (1 year ago)
Thanks for the help! One more question. I set up the proxy in utorrent, and got the success message. But I keep checking that check torrent and it keeps saying different things. Currently it says: "Proxy connect error: An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions." Oh, and I can't force the update. I'm also running PeerBlock. I've checked all my lists and couldn't find anything that stood out. I did however delete it and download a new check torrent from torguard. It works perfectly now. So my only concern is losing the proxy when I download.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Not a dumb question at all. I'll do my best to explain and feel free to ask for clarification if you're still a little fuzzy on some points. First, running the VPN software on your computer will not change the IP of your router, so all other devices connected to your router will have the same IP address you always had. The IP address shown on the router is actually your 'Internal' ip address, which is the router's location on your home network. This should not be confused with an 'external' IP, which is the Ip address of your home connection in context of the entire internet. So a VPN will change your external IP, not your internal IP. Yes, it IS possible to have a router connect to a VPN directly (which will give all VPN benefits to every device connected to that router, possibly even 10's or hundreds of devices in theory). The catch is this...the router you have at home probably can't handle a VPN connection. The math behind VPN encryption is extremely complex, so while it's easy for your PC or smartphone, most router CPU's cannot handle it. There are a small number of higher-end routers ($100-250 range) that can handle VPN connections. Some of these even have direct VPN support built into the router firmware. If you're interested, I recommend the ASUS AC-68U (which I have used personally). It has a dual-core CPU, can handle VPN speeds of 25+mbps, and takes less than 5 minutes to configure with any VPN provider that supports openVPN. It's currently around $160 on amazon. I will have setup tutorials for installing a VPN on a router on my new youtube channel in the next couple months.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
There's a reason that 'turn it off and then on again' is the first instruction given by all over-the-phone tech support. It works surprisingly often :-)
Christopher Hirsch (1 year ago)
Also, dumb question: So is your router exposed? Or does it bear the address? Is there a way to configure a VPN for a router?
Schriebel (1 year ago)
VPNTestDrive iplocation.net shows the location of my provider (VodaPhone -> Netherlands). This location is not the same location as my location? Does this mean I can download torrents safely?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Sorry for the slow response, youtube marked your comment as spam because it contains a link. The proxy is located in the netherlands so that is normal. Under the 'ISP' column, does it say Vodaphone? Or another provider? As long as the ISP is not listed as VodaPhone, you are set.
itsjustwood (1 year ago)
Thanks for the speedy reply... That's awesome... Yeah I'm interested in the keeping anonymous for sure
itsjustwood (1 year ago)
Do you still use PIA... This video is 2 years old... Is there an updated video? I'm really interested in getting this service and was wondering if the setup is still the same...thanks for your hard work... This video was awesome!!
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Yes, I do still use PIA. Their service works exactly the same as it did 2 years ago. The only difference is they've added about 10 server locations since then. I currently use IPVanish for my day-to-day security, but for the price you cannot beat PIA. PIA is also better suited for torrents than other providers because it includes the SOCKS5 proxy.

Hey man, I'm a newbie to all of this and I followed your instructions and everything is working perfectly with PIA.  I just heard about seedbox.  What is your opinion on torrenting and seedbox.  Should I sign up for seedbox too and run my VPN through it?  Or is that just overkill?  I'm just a little paranoid when it comes to torrenting.  I used your coupon code and the price of PIA is definitely worth it.  Should I invest in seedbox too?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Sorry, just saw this comment. Youtube marked it as spam for some reason. Enabling PIA on a seedbox would probably undo most of the speed advantages of using a seedbox in the first place. Personally I have never used a seedbox, however they do come highly recommended in the torrent community among active and high volume torrenters. Of course they are expensive (more than a VPN anyway) but I bet you find a reddit thread with reliable seedbox recommendations if you wanted to go that route.

I used the tool from torguard to check my ip address and its showing me a different IP address than what I have if I check /ipconfig.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
ipconfig only tells you your local (home network) IP address. It will usually be something like 192.168.1.xxx. If your proxy is set up properly, your torrent IP address (checked with torguard's tool) SHOULD be different then your actual external IP address. You can even find the location of your torrent IP address by typing the IP into a tool like iplocation.net, which will show you what country the proxy server is located in.
Kunou's (2 years ago)
Wait, are you saying that I could use PIA through just uTorrent without changing my Windows network settings? I've never used a VPN but I'd like to subscribe to PIA. However, I don't like how you have to make your whole computer use PIA. I would just like to torrent through PIA and browse the net, game, etc., without it. Is this possible?
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
I'll answer your questions in order: 1 - You can use PIA without changing your windows network settings. It's just an application that you have to run instead of manually changing any settings. The App temporarily overrides your network settings and forces traffic to go through the VPN tunnel. 2 - If you don't want your entire connection to use PIA, you can use the proxy setup option (as shown in the video) but don't run the VPN. This will change your torrent IP address but it will not encrypt your traffic or route any non-torrent traffic through the VPN.
IAmKneeGrow (2 years ago)
does this work for bittorrent as well
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You bet. The bittorrent client is basically an exact utorrent clone. In fact you can use these proxy settings for any major desktop torrent client.
rwtactics (2 years ago)
everything costs money. Which doesn't bother me. But the headline advertised free.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
I agree that the headline is clickbaity. The headline is VPN w/ free proxy, meaning the proxy service is included with a VPN subscription (which I clarify in both the video and description). Most VPNs charge extra for proxy service. You can also use these same setup instructions with a free socks5 proxy (assuming you can find one that actually works).
jdmercard (2 years ago)
Is the proxy vital to remain anonymous to my ISP? Or can I just use the VPN established by PIA? Thanks for the info!
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
You can just run the VPN. In fact, if you had to choose one or the other, a VPN is a better option (because it's encrypted). The proxy changes your IP but does not encrypt. When running PIA's VPN it will also prevent your ISP from monitoring your web history (they can't see your searches or what sites you visit any more).
jdmercard (2 years ago)
I'm getting a proxy connect error on CheckmyIP in uTorrent after inputting proxy server info. I'm using a Mac.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
So it sounds like something about your proxy configuration is wrong. Double check the proxy address and port #. Also, did you generate a new proxy login/password from your PIA account panel? Or are you just using your VPN login credentials.
jdmercard (1 year ago)
So when I put the proxy into utorrent, it's gives me an error. The checkip tool works before I add the proxy.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
So utorrent won't download? or you're just having trouble getting the checkip tool to work?
Craig Lewis (2 years ago)
Can you do an updated video setting this up on a Mac using the new version of uTorrent (Beta 1.8.8 build 40618) and I am confused on which VPN/Proxy service to use. I am using OSX El Capitan 10.11.6
Craig Lewis (1 year ago)
Thanks I figured it out, have everything setup now.
VPNTestDrive (1 year ago)
Unfortunately I don't have access to a mac. The VPN you choose shouldn't really matter based on your platform or torrent client of choice. Every modern version of utorrent (mac & windows) is compatible with SOCKS5 proxies. And any VPN that runs on mac (which is basically all of them) can encrypt your connection.
