Why get a really good kids mountain bike?

03:59
Previous video: https://youtu.be/TGK0qVbP830 El Oso Niño Kids Fat Bike: http://amzn.to/28PBGEy Line 24 Kids Hardtail: http://amzn.to/1Y3q0dU This is Domingo, a pretty average sized adult, and here’s me riding a 24” kids mountain bike. We’ll get back to that in a minute, but first let’s talk about kids bikes in general. I know that pricey kids bikes are a tough sell for most parents. Kids grow really fast, and they change their interests from day to day. For $150 bucks, you can get them something that pedals around until they grow out of it. From what I can see, this is what most kids end up with. Given the reasons I mentioned, it’s hard to blame any parent for this, especially when you consider the other costs that come along with kids. Some parents do see the value in spending a little more though. A nice kids bike will have better parts and a smoother ride, but I think that’s obvious to most people. “Good parts” isn’t a good enough selling point for most parents, but I think the weight of the bike should be. At 6 years old, I weighed about 45 pounds, but the weight of this cheap 20” kids bike is 36 pounds. Now let’s say you weigh 160. How would you fare on a 130 pound bike? How well could you stop it, or maneuver it? That’s about what this bike would feel like to a 6 year old. Even if they have the strength to pedal and climb hills with it, let’s also consider the brakes and shifters. You hear that? That’s a little kid shifting gears. Kids learn real quick, but their hands aren’t very strong. A well designed kids bike will not only be to scale with their weight, but also use parts that are refined enough for little hands. These kids were all able to hold a decent pace on Saturday, partially because they’re all bad asses, but also because they have decent bikes. So with those points made, let’s have some fun. We have here, two nice kids bikes that I’ll be giving away later this afternoon. Before that, my sister and I are going to take them out on some easy trails to see how they ride. I assembled both of these earlier this week, knowing that we’d be doing this, so I made sure they were both tuned up from top to bottom. The plan was to go easy on these bikes, but I was having a little too much fun on what felt like a 24” dirt jumper. Lucky for this bike, there were no jumps around. I decided to take a chance and see if I could bunny hop the hardtail on to this picnic table. The lower bench was no problem but the top part looked pretty scary. Keep in mind that this also means dropping off the other side—all 155 pounds of me. Both bikes left the trailhead in perfect working order, ready for more abuse from the kids. And abuse them they did… From hard shifting, to crashes, to direct impacts on the chainrings, these bikes held up to exactly the kind of abuse you could expect from kids. If you want see more about this event or these bikes, check the description for a link to my previous video. So nobody expects you to get a $3000 carbon race bike for your kid, but getting a better bike with kid friendly components will ensure that they get a fun and enjoyable introduction to mountain biking. At the very least, do it for yourself. After all, the faster they go the more fun it’ll be for you to follow them.

$149 Mountain Bike vs mountain - The Walmart Enduro

12:00
Welcome to Pisgah Forest, home to a huge array of remote and challenging mountain bike trails. To get anywhere here, you need to climb a few thousand feet. To get out alive your bike needs to hold up to roots, sharp rocks, and sustained braking. There’s no cell phone reception out here, and the trails are far too narrow for emergency vehicles. When your very life depends on your equipment, what value would you place on reliability? That fact that we’re at Walmart is pretty irrelevant. It could just as easily be Target, Amazon.com, or even Canadian Tire. They all offer the same thing—bikes built and assembled to the lowest spec possible. With names like trouble, wipeout, ambush, and carnage, these bikes deliver what they promise, but today we’re staying optimistic. Alex and I are taking our time and weighing our options. Even in a sea of super cheap bikes, we can choose the ones that suit our priorities best. We settled on a pair of Genesis V2100’s, which had front discs, threadless headsets, and half decent saddles. As we checked out, reality started to set in. We’d be relying on these bikes for over 5000 feet of elevation change. We’d need all the help we could get. Back at the house I packed everything from sockets to gorilla tape, to zip ties, to extra food, lest we get stranded on the far reaches of mount Mitchell. We set out with our new bikes in tow, and kept two main goals in mind; Make it down the trail in one piece, and finish it off with Mexican food. What started as a ride quickly devolved into a grueling hike. It wasn’t the gearing, or even the weight—we just tried and couldn’t. The tires had no traction, and the bikes flexed like crazy under any kind of torque. Once the grade evened out we had a much easier time, and started to clear some serious ground. We were enjoying nature, and It wasn’t long before we reached our first downhill. Although it was only 50 yards, it was telling. Alex and I settled in for a long ride up the old Mitchell toll road, knowing full well that the climb might be the easy part. We were climbing at a snail’s pace, painstakingly choosing our lines. Our cranks started creaking, and our hubs began to eat themselves, but we picked our way up the toll road without encountering any major mechanical failures. In fact, we were enjoying ourselves. For $149, Alex and I were taking part in an activity enjoyed by the likes of dentists and jewelers, with their pretty $6000 bikes. What do those bikes do that these can’t anyway? On my trail bike, this janky rock garden is a blast. On this bike, I couldn’t wait for it to be over. As you can see, Alex had been going much slower than me. He had the sense to. His bike had not one bit of damage to it, while I was nursing a blown up fork and no drivetrain whatsoever. It was clear by this comparison that speed is the major destructive force on these bikes. As I edit this video, my hands, arms, shoulders, and torso still hurt from this ride. On my trail bike, the brakes can be applied with one finger. On the Genesis, braking is a full body workout that leaves you in pain for days. We had made it to the end, sort of…. we still needed to get to the car. Luckily it was mostly downhill and I could hitch a ride on Alex’s backpack. After beating ourselves up for the better part of 5 hours, there was only one thing on our minds. Playing around on department store bikes might be fun and games, but I found that riding one on an actual mountain bike excursion is not fun, and most definitely not a game. Still I’m amazed that Alex’s bike survived. Although he was using a lot more restraint than I was, everything from the gears to the brakes were working at the bottom. To Walmart’s credit, there are warnings on these bikes that tell you not to take them on mountain bike trails. After our journey, I’d have reason to believe that on a flat dirt path, the Genesis V2100 would inconvenience you at the very most, not kill you. But just like sushi, tattoos, and cosmetic surgery, you’ll regret cheaping out on a bike that you really intend on exploring the mountains with. If you want to fall in love with mountain biking, try renting something first, or save up $400 for an entry level hardtail. In the meantime you can hike these trails for free. With one of these you may be hiking anyway. If you enjoyed this video, I have plenty of others on this topic. Let me know what you think below, and better yet give me some ideas of what to do with these next. Thanks for riding with me today, and I’ll see you next time.

How to choose a beginner mountain bike - Mountain Biking Explained EP2

07:20
In this video we talk mostly about what to look for in a good beginner bike, namely the things that make it affordable, functional, reliable, and easy to upgrade later on. These are the bare bones things a trail worthy mountain bike should have. We also talk a bit about helmets, and why you might want to spend a bit more on a better one. All Products in this video: https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/mountain-biking-explained/ Choosing a beginner bike: https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/?p=1286&preview=true ****** Last time, we set Lisa up with everything she needed to start mountain biking. She now has a bike, a helmet, a hydration pack, gloves, and a multi tool. She also has a floor pump, and a rack to transport her bike with. As Lisa progresses we’ll be looking at all this stuff in more detail, but today we’re going to focus on the two things you need most to get on the trails: A bike, and a helmet. Even if you don’t have your own bike—even if you plan on renting a bike, I still recommend you get your own helmet wearing someone else’s helmet kinda freaks me out. Lisa is wearing a Kali Protectives Chakra, which would be considered a general purpose mountain biking helmet. It’s lightweight, has good ventilation, fits securely, and looks cool, which are all things you might spend a couple of extra dollars for. Really cheap helmets are usually bulky, uncomfortable, and poorly ventilated, and that’s no fun. The Chakra, like most bike helmets is single impact, so it’s only made to protect your head once. If your helmet gets impacted, it should be replaced even if the damage isn’t visible. In my experience, shoes wear out before helmets do, so don’t cheap on a helmet just because you might need to replace it. Even a real good one is under $50. For the rest of this video, we’ll be talking about bikes; specifically, what should you look for in a good beginner bike? Well the four ities of course. The four ities are: affordability, reliability, serviceability, and simplicity. To find a bike with all four ities, you can go to a bike shop, search online, and even buy used. Rather than tell you exactly what to get and where to get it from, I’d rather help you understand what to look for so you can choose a bike on your own. I’ll be using Lisa’s bike as an example, because I chose it specifically for these reasons. At around $650, the Hook is of pretty good value. In the last video I mentioned that this is a hardtail, meaning it only has a suspension fork. This, as opposed to a full suspension bike that squishes down in the rear as well. While full suspension bikes are great, they’re also a lot more complex than hardtails. This complexity adds cost, weight, and additional maintenance, so only go this route if you’re comfortable spending some extra money. Figure on at least 500 for a trailworthy hardtail, and at least 1200 for full suspension. These are just guidelines, and I stress that the first ity might be different for different people. Let’s take a look at some other characteristics of Lisa’s bike. First of all it has disc brakes, as opposed to rim brakes. Disc brakes are virtually maintenance free besides changing the pads, and they’ll stop the bike even when it’s covered in dirt and mud. These are activated by cable, but more expensive bikes use hydraulic fluid. While hydraulic is better, any disc brake is better than a rim brake. Moving on you can see that Lisa’s wheels have quick release levers, which make removal of the wheels possible without tools. More expensive bikes will come a very similar looking thru axle. On the other hand if a mountain bike wheel is held on with nuts, you are looking at an extreme cost cutting measure which will make the bike difficult to maintain and next to impossible to upgrade. Aside from specialty bikes like dirt jumpers, you want a mountain bike with levers on the axles. Turn on the closed captions to read the rest of the transcript.

Behold! The Mongoose Dolomite Fat Bike

04:08
This is the bike: http://amzn.to/1ZFg5bw This is the next video: https://youtu.be/9Hg7vjmlCuA It's hard for me to complain about the Mongoose Dolomite, since it's a sub $200 fat bike. No, it doesn’t shift nicely, and yes, it has one of those terrible seat clamps with the bolts on the sides. It’s precisely compromises like these that make super cheap bikes possible. So with that understanding, I'll give an overview of this bike's strong and weak points. First of all the paint job is impressive. Even the rims have a nice red powder coat on them, which does a pretty good job of hiding this huge weld. The saddle is also quite comfortable. The rear derailleur is from Shimano's Tourney group set, which is suspiciously absent from their website. Although I see it available for $6 on the internet, I think it might be the most expensive part on this entire drivetrain. Speaking of drivetrains, I've gotta give credit to Mongoose for setting this up with a 1x. This makes the bike much cleaner and more mechanically sound. With that said, I think they should have chosen a smaller chainring for the front. At 47 pounds, this thing is pretty hard to pedal on flat, let alone on sand or up hill. I will say though that it's lighter than my last bike by a full pound—of course on that bike I packed the components with sand and pumped the tires full of water. The disc brakes suck terribly, but surprisingly they are totally adjustable like normal ones. Most department store bikes are built in some proprietary way that makes them difficult or impossible to service. This bike breaks that trend to some extent. That makes me wonder if a better set of pads would improve the stopping power. For now, all I need to do is stop pedaling and the bike comes to standstill pretty fast. I was especially happy to see a threadless headset. Compared to a threaded headset and quill stem, this feels incredibly solid, and dare I say—safe. I expect this headset to hold up much better than my last one, and I also expect the alignment to stay put. I have ridden quite a few fat tire bikes, and they were generally heavy and sluggish compared to their skinny counterparts. Still, I was always pleasantly surprised at how well they handled for their size. Not this bike. Sure, if you pump the tires to 20PSI it rolls and steers well, but it’s then useless on sand or chattery terrain. Reduce the pressure to 10 PSI, like a real fat bike, and its off-road performance does improve. Unfortunately, this makes the bike extremely difficult to control, as the steering pulls whichever way you’re turning. I think this is due to the cheap tires, which are pretty thick and shaped oddly. I also think wider bars and a shorter stem would make this bike easier to manage. If you have this bike and want to give it an upgrade, I might recommend that shorter stem paired with cheap set of 760mm bars. Even after these shortcomings, I firmly believe this Mongoose Dolomite is a marvel of engineering. Like I said, everything on this is a compromise, designed to keep it below $200. As a society we asked for a cheap fat bike, and here it is. It may seem like certain things could have been made better for the same price though. For instance, would a smaller chainring in the front have changed the price? Well, maybe. You see these bikes benefit from economies of scale, or using parts that can be produced in mass quantity. So, it could have been that this very popular crankset/chainring combination was actually the cheapest route. This scenario is very likely, and is probably the case for many other parts on this bike. So, we don’t really have the right to nitpick the gear ratio. So now for the real question; why did I buy this bike? Why not a nice fat bike? Well, I have some plans which I wouldn’t have the heart to carry out on a bike like that. If you’ve been following my videos, you could probably guess that the Dolomite is gonna have a rough week. Stay tuned, because in the next video, things might get a little salty. Thanks for riding with me today, and I'll see you next time. 12:33
This video is sponsored by SportRX. They paid for my travel, lodging, and food during the San Diego part of my trip. ---- What too look for when buying mountain bike riding glasses. MTB Sunglasses are expensive, and buying the correct mountain biking glasses or even prescription cycling glasses is tough. Rob from SportRX gives some tips about what to look for when buying MTB riding glasses. This video is outside my normal wheelhouse of videos. It's everything you need to know about riding Sunglasses, where I pick Rob's brain. This video takes place at the end of the week in San Diego (after Sedona). I really got to know the SportRX crew well. We wanted to make sure that this was a good partnership for both of us. We spent some time in trying out various glasses, lenses and even visiting manufactures such as Oakley. SportRX ▶︎ http://bit.ly/SportRX1018 Save 10% by using PROMOCODE: skills10 Need Prescription Riding glasses? They got you too! A little back story: After Sedona, I traveled out to San Diego to spend some time with Rob, who is Vice President of SportRX as well as a big fan of the channel. SportRX specializes in prescription sports eyewear, making glasses for MLB players, Snowboarders, and athletes of all different backgrounds. Essentially they really know their stuff. Now, I don't currently wear prescription lenses, but everybody in my family has. It's not something that has been on my mind but I know it will at some point affect me, so I might as well learn as much as I can about this subject to be able to relay this information to my subscribers who perhaps never knew this was an option. What's the difference between women's specific road bikes and men's road bikes? Subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Get exclusive GCN gear in the GCN shop! http://gcn.eu/2haE7Lp Olympian and former professional cyclist Lucy Martin shares her advice on choosing the perfect road bike for women. Nearly every manufacturer has a full range of women's specific road bikes now, so, if you're looking for a new bike, you might be left thinking that a women's specific road bike is the only option for women. Well, you'd be wrong. Although the component choices also differ and are also intended to be better suited to women, what's essential is choosing a bike that fits YOU. This might mean getting a women's road bike, getting a men's road, or getting a men's bike and switching over a few of the components like the saddle and the handlebars. Got cycling questions? Mountain Biking Explained - EP1

05:11
All gear in this video: https://www.sethsbikehacks.com/mountain-biking-explained/ Next Video: https://youtu.be/X6J5WwllX1k?list=PL5S7V5NhM8JQoi8vhELX-9aYHmRtmCveT Any outdoor activity can be really fulfilling, but my activity of choice is mountain biking. A mountain bike can quickly cover any terrain, and take you amazing places inaccessible by many other vehicles. Plus, mountain biking is a great way to get in shape, push yourself, and even make lifelong friends. The vast majority of mountain bikers went on their first ride with a friend, parent, or coworker who was already experienced. When your experienced friend takes you out on the trails, they can fix your mechanical problems, warn you about obstacles ahead, and even tell you when to shift gears. The thing is, not everyone has that guidance. Meet Lisa. She’s not an actress and she’s never been mountain biking before, but she wants to learn. Follow along with Lisa as she learns how to ride, how to find trails, and how to perform basic maintenance on her bike. She’ll go through everything you will, and probably have a lot of the same questions. She’s going to have a lot of fun, and probably make a lot of friends, but she sure as hell won’t be doing it on this bike. This is a hybrid, or comfort bike. Surprisingly, it’s sometimes mistaken for a mountain bike. The shocks, the gears, and the fat tires make it look like it’s designed for riding off road, but this sticker states otherwise. So we’ll need to max out Lisa’s credit card and get her set up for the trails. First she’ll need a bike, a helmet, and some gloves. She’ll also need a floor pump with a gauge, as tire pressure is really important in mountain biking. She’ll also need a hydration backpack, which holds lots of water, and other stuff like her cell phone, supplies, and car keys. Speaking of car keys, Lisa will need a bike rack, unless she’s okay with putting a filthy muddy bike in her back seat. I’d also recommend a multitool. Altogether, this will cost around $1000, but that’s just a guide. You may already have some of this stuff, and often times you can find it used. Over the course of a year, many people spend over $1000 on coffee, and definitely more than that on ordering in lunch. Do the math. Chances are you could make your own coffee, pack your lunch, or scale back on something else to make room for mountain biking. With the right beginner gear, Lisa has the headroom she needs to grow and improve without being limited. She has a bike that can be easily maintained, repaired, and upgraded, and gear that will last her many many rides. In the upcoming videos we’ll go over all this stuff, where to get it, and how to use it. Now that she’s all set up I’m thinking we should shock Lisa’s system with a ride on Porcupine Rim, a 3000 foot descent along the edge of a mountain, followed by a bone jarring ride across miles of Jeep road. Then, a blistering descent along a big friggin cliff…or we could start on some dirt paths and teach Lisa the basics first. That’s the safest way to start mountain biking; getting used to your bike before you try anything crazy. Lisa is riding through a beginner trail, which is usually just a dirt path with some loose terrain. This isn’t much different from riding in the street, but it does get you used to riding in narrow spaces with tight turns. To find mountain bike trails there are apps, and websites that show listings by area. This listing on singletracks.com shows the difficulty level of these trails. Green dots are for beginners. Before we start turning Lisa into a mountain biker she’ll need to know some terminology. We’ll do a little of this in every video, but first we’ll start with the most basic terms you’ll hear the most. This is a hardtail, or a mountain bike with front suspension. Some bikes also have suspension in the rear. These are called “Full suspension mountain bikes”. Full suspension, hardtail. Most beginners get hardtails because they’re less costly and easier to maintain. This is singletrack, or a narrow trail designed for one rider at a time. Most mountain bike trails are singletrack, so you’ll hear this term a lot. It usually just means a trail. This is a trailhead, or the entrance to a trail system. This is where you’ll park your car, get set up, and meet with your riding buddies. So before Lisa goes to the trailhead to ride some singletrack on her hardtail, she’ll need to learn how to use all this gear, install a bike rack, and master a few techniques that make riding singletrack different from riding pavement. If you’re an experienced mountain biker who follows this channel, now’s the time to get your friends started by turning them on to this series. We’ll still be doing the normal stuff in between, but every couple of weeks I’ll be releasing another episode with lessons for beginners. Try to be helpful and answer questions in the comment section.

Are Walmart mountain bikes safe?

02:51
Next Video: https://youtu.be/m3vI2bYhCrk?list=PL5S7V5NhM8JSRoe6ovF2fifd5L7BsyLRF I’ve been getting a lot of questions about department store bikes. These bikes are readily available at places like Walmart for as little as $100. Can a bike that cheap really be ridden on the trails? Is it fine for a beginner? What about bunnyhops, manuals, and other techniques? How much of that can one of these bikes take? Well, there's only one way to find out. In the name of science, I picked up this mongoose at Walmart. It's a full suspension, 21 speed mountain bike with lots of bells and whistles––oh and it costs less than my dropper seat post. With Florida State Sales tax and a Dr. Pepper, I still paid less than $150. The first thing I did was put the bike up on the stand for a comprehensive safety check. Whoever assembled this bike either didn't know how, or didn't give a shit. I think it may have been a combination of both. The gears and brakes were ridiculously bad, but I already expected that. I didn't expect the bars to be out of alignment with the forks, or the wheels to be completely out of true. Also the steering was indexed, which means the headset was overtightened during assembly. I tried to fix this to no avail, so I left it tight with the best case scenario being that it breaks in. The spokes were like spaghetti, which leads to bent rims. I tightened every spoke on both wheels, and then did a standard truing to get everything dead straight. After I did my 2 hour tuneup I brought the bike down Elmo at two& for a professional opinion. He greased the mechanism in the quill stem, and dicked around with the gears and brakes. Thanks to Elmo, I might not die on this bike. The things I found wrong on this bike were pretty serious. Most of the issues would have quickly led to mechanical failure or even injury. For instance, without greasing the stem, the bars were easy to move independent of the front wheel. Maybe this isn't always the case, but I can only base my experience on this bike. So if you're buying a bike from a department store, don't ride it without a thorough safety check. A bike you get at a shop, on the other hand, will leave in perfect working order, and usually include a free tuneup after it breaks in. So, yeah, keep that in mind too. There are hidden costs to buying a department store bike. Overall, the bike is pretty impressive for $140. Everything works now, the suspension is….plush…and the saddle is actually pretty comfortable. The bike doesn’t even look that bad. I can’t wait to beat the shit out of it, but one thing at a time. In the next video, we’ll take my Mongoose to Amelia Earhart Mountain Bike Trails to see what it can do. Thanks for riding with me today and I’ll see you next time.
