Are women discriminated against in the workplace? Looking at the data, women on average earn an annual wage that is approximately 75% that of men, which many people believe is the result of discrimination. Learn more: http://bit.ly/1HVAtKP However, when Prof. Steve Horwitz analyzes the data more closely, he finds that women make certain choices, such as career selection and raising children, which tend to result in lower wages than men. These choices could be the result of personal preferences or sexist cultural expectations for women's work, though the relative influence of these two factors remains unclear. Wages are the biggest expense for most businesses. So, hiring only women would reduce costs by nearly a quarter – and that would go right to the bottom line. Don’t businesses want to be profitable? Or, are they just really bad at math? Well, actually, it’s the feminists, celebrities and politicians spreading this wage gap myth who have the math problem. Here’s why: The 77-cents-on-the-dollar statistic is calculated by dividing the median earnings of all women working full-time by the median earnings of all men working full-time. In other words, if the average income of all men is, say, 40,000 dollars a year, and the average annual income of all women is, say, 30,800 dollars, that would mean that women earn 77 cents for every dollar a man earns. 30,800 divided by 40,000 equals .77. But these calculations don’t reveal a gender wage injustice because it doesn’t take into account occupation, position, education or hours worked per week. Even a study by the American Association of University Women, a feminist organization, shows that the actual wage gap shrinks to only 6.6 cents when you factor in different choices men and women make. And the key word here is “choice.” The small wage gap that does exist has nothing to do with paying women less, let alone with sexism; it has to do with differences in individual career choices that men and women make. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Labor released a paper that examined more than 50 peer-reviewed studies and concluded that the oft-cited 23 percent wage gap “may be almost entirely the result of individual choices being made by both male and female workers.” Well, let’s look at some of those choices. Georgetown University compiled a list of the five best-paying college majors, and the percentage of men or women majoring in those fields: Number 1 best-paying major: Petroleum Engineering: 87% male Number 2: Pharmaceutical Sciences: 48% male 3: Mathematics and Computer Science: 67% male 4: Aerospace Engineering: 88% male 5: Chemical Engineering: 72% male Notice that women out-represent men in only one of the five top-paying majors – by only a few percentage points. Now consider the same study’s list of the five worst paying college majors: Number 1: Counseling and Psychology: 74% female Number 2: Early Childhood Education: 97% female 3: Theology and Religious Vocations: 66% male 4: Human Services and Community Organization: 81% female 5: Social Work: 88% female Here, it’s the women who lead in all but one category. Even within the same profession, men and women make different career choices that impact how much money they make. Take nursing, where male nurses on the whole earn 18% more than female nurses. The reason? Male nurses gravitate to the best-paying nursing specialties, they work longer hours, and disproportionately find jobs in cities with the highest compensation. Women in the European Union earn on average 16.2% less than men, according to the European Commission. On November 3, the EU Equal Pay Day will mark the moment, when the European Commission says women "stop getting paid" compared to their male colleagues - two months before the end of the year. Ahead of the day, European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans, Commissioner Marianne Thyssen and Commissioner Věra Jourová said: “Women and men are equal. This is one of the EU's founding values. But women still effectively work for two months unpaid each year, compared to their male colleagues. We cannot accept this situation any longer," The Commission has launched an "EU Action Plan on Tackling the Gender Pay Gap" which focuses on eight key areas for action, including combatting stereotypes and tackling the care penalty. Hephzi Pemberton, the CEO of the Equality Group told Good Morning Europe that "change definitely starts with a greater awareness and transparency around the issues," but there need to be "more proactive approaches taken to plug in this unpaid care gap that exists to promoting more women into senior positions and encouraging them into the highest paid jobs and the highest paid industries,"

(8 Mar 2016) As the world marks International Women's Day, the issue of gender equality is still a problem in Europe. The situation is particularly bad in Estonia which has the biggest gender pay gap in the EU of 28.3 percent. In a report released by Eurostat, the EU's statistical office, on Monday, Estonia is lagging far behind Europe's 16.5 per cent average. Kelly Grossthal, Equal treatment expert at Estonia Human Rights Centre told the Associated Press on Tuesday that not enough was being done done to promote equality in the country. In Estonia there are more women than men, but the country's current 15-member government has only two female ministers. Less than a quarter of lawmakers at the 101-member Riigikogu, or Parliament, are female. Local residents still celebrated International Women's Day in Tallinn, by buying and gifting flowers to female workers and relatives. But economist, Yelena Zapuskalova, warned many in Estonia accepted the status quo, and that women would have to fight for it to change. According to the analysis conducted by women’s rights organization Fawcett Society, British women are likely to earn 300-thousand pounds less than men over their working lives. This shows a gap of 24 percent in average full-time annual salaries between women and men in the UK more than four decades after the introduction of the Equal Pay Act. The analysis also highlights faster growth for men’s full-time salaries of one-point-six percent compared with one-point-four percent for women in the year to April 2015. Last year, Prime Minister David Cameron pledged to fight gender inequality by setting new rules. The female employment rate has been rising here in Korea， with government data showing women now account for nearly 40 percent of the workforce. And yet， it seems the country still has a long way to go when it comes to closing the pay gap between women and men. Won Ji－hyun reports. Women are a growing presence in the workforce， but they are still earning far less money than men in Korea. According to the National Tax Service， there were about 6－point－4－million female workers in 2013，... which means that women represented nearly 40－percent of the workforce. That′s an increase of more than a million since 2009.. with about half of the women working in the manufacturing， healthcare and the service sectors. Women are also making more money than they used to. In 2009， women made around 15－thousand U.S. dollars a year on average. Four years later， in 2013， the figure had gone up to 19－thousand U.S. dollars. But even with the increase， women are still paid much less than men. For instance， the average male worker made around 34－thousand U.S. dollars in 2013，... or about 43－percent more than their female counterparts. That pay gap was almost triple the OECD average of 12－point－8 percent that year，... putting Korea at the top of the list of gender wage gap. Despite the unequal pay between men and women， the National Tax Service report shows that more than 40－thousand women in Korea were six－figure earners in 2013，... with most of them in the financial sector. The report also showed that more women were taking on leadership positions， as CEOs， and opening up their own businesses. Won Ji－hyun， Arirang News.

They get lower salaries right out of college and will make less than men at every education levels. In fact, that gap expands as you climb up the education ladder. Women with PhDs, for example, earn 5.4 percent less than men with the same qualifications. To find out why this is happening, economists have controlled for every factor: from work experience to college major to number of hours worked and found that some of the gap can’t be explained and may very well be due to plain old discrimination. But there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. California has passed a bill to require employers to pay men and women the same pay for similar work and let workers talk about pay with each other. And now, a Republican senator in a tough reelection race has introduced similar legislation. Now isn’t that something?

According to a recent "study", female-led movies earn more money than male-led movies. But is this REALLY true, or are the findings skewed? From ComicBook.com - https://comicbook.com/starwars/2018/12/12/female-led-movies-more-successful-star-wars-rey-captain-marvel/ "In certain dark and disturbing corners of the internet, ignorant movie fans decry the rise of compelling female characters leading franchise films out of a bizarre fear of inadequacy and hope it is merely a trend. Luckily, new data confirms that not only is more female representation better for culture as a whole, but it also leads to more successful films at the box office. Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and shift7 collected data from films releases between 2014 and 2017 with budgets ranging from less than $10 million to more than $100 million. If a female was the first billed actor in the credits, the film was considered to have a female lead, with the data confirming that each budgetary range saw these films perform better than films without a female as the lead. In addition to deducing that films with female leads resulted in higher box office, the study also concluded that films that passed the Bechdel test, which depicts two women having a conversation that isn't about a man, also enjoyed a more successful box office return, on average. “This analysis affirms data showing that diversity has a positive impact on a company’s bottom line,” TIME’S UP President and CEO Lisa Borders shared in a statement. “As studios consider their fiduciary responsibilities to their investors, these findings offer a clear approach to delivering the best results.” There are still many variables to consider regarding the success of many of the films, such as a franchise's familiarity with audiences and whether or not a film featured ensemble casts, such as Star Wars or Marvel Cinematic Universe films. The data does, however, refute the notion that films focusing on a female character might be considered a risky endeavor in any capacity, especially in big-budget blockbusters. “This is powerful proof that audiences want to see everyone represented on screen,” former Sony Pictures Chairman Amy Pascal expressed. “Decision-makers in Hollywood need to pay attention to this.” One complaint voiced by a sexist subset of fans is that franchises which were once dominated by male characters are now forcing a "feminist agenda," seemingly forgetting that the movement merely seeks to imbue women with equal rights to men. More females rising to prominence in established franchises sees our society more accurately represented, as opposed to creating the idea that only men can be heroes. “What we see on screen affects how we see ourselves and each other, and can increase or decrease confidence,” shift7 CEO Megan Smith shared. “When people who have been traditionally under-represented are stereotyped, or left out of the story entirely, we diminish confidence and deprive people of role models and directly hold back the country’s economic and social potential.” New T-SHIRT Shop for official Clownfish TV swag - https://teespring.com/en-GB/stores/clownfish-tv ► SUBSCRIBE to Our Channel - http://bit.ly/Sub2ClownfishTV ► Join Us on DISCORD - http://discord.gg/dtWKtSj Social Media Blog - http://d-rezzed.clownfishtv.com Facebook - http://facebook.com/RealClownfishTV Twitter - http://twitter.com/RealClownfishTV Instagram - http://instagram.com/RealClownfishTV CLOWNFISH TV covers Gaming, Animation, Drawing and Pop Culture.
