Fox walking across tarmac STORYLINE: Mexican President Vicente Fox is the latest head of state to arrive in Geneva on his way to the three-day summit of the Group of Eight industrialised countries in Evian, France. Fox has said that his country should be permanently invited to the G-8 meeting. In an interview with the Financial Times of London, he said that as the world's ninth-largest economy it would only be what he called "natural and logical". Earlier on Saturday, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva arrived in Geneva en route to the summit. This year's economic summit, which starts on Sunday, is the first since the Iraq war exposed a big rift amongst trans-Atlantic allies. Leaders say they will seek agreement on boosting a sluggish global economy, fighting AIDS and promoting Middle East peace. Nevertheless, US President George W Bush's decision to leave early is a sharp reminder of remaining differences. In recent days, France, Germany, Russia and Canada - the four G8 summit countries that opposed the war - have all sought to heal the divisions. Their leaders insist they are looking forward to a productive three days of talks in the French alpine spa of Evian. While the summit's accomplishments may be small, the number of countries participating will set a record. In addition to the eight summit countries, French President Jacques Chirac has used his prerogative as chairman to invite 12 other leaders representing poor nations in Africa and several major developing nations including China, Brazil and India. How to Stop Unproductive Meetings at Work with Colin Boyd

03:51
How to Stop Unproductive Meetings at Work is a short and insightful video helping you to decide whether you should go to a meeting or not. Colin Boyd High-Performance Leadership Expert http://www.colinboyd.com.au Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/colinboydcoach Twitter: https://twitter.com/colingboyd ======================================= Do you get a lot of meeting requests? A lot of my clients talk to me about how they get so many meeting requests. Today I want to have a conversation with you about a 3-step formula I’ve designed which will help you manage your meeting requests. Enabling you to make better decisions about whether you should go to a meeting or not. It’s called the Meeting Resistance Model. I think there are three problems that people face around meetings. #1. They get too many meetings. They get the whole week filled up with meetings before they can even get to it. #2. Wrong timing of meetings. So in terms of how the timing works for you in your week, it’s a wrong timing. #3. The wrong people are in meetings. Maybe there’s too many people, or they’re just the wrong people in meetings. So how do we fix these problems? I want to share with you the Meeting Resistance Model. It’s a funnel that will help you to make better meeting decisions. Imagine this: you’ve got this big funnel that your decisions run through. 1. Meeting requests come in and the first decision you need to make is Right Context. So you ask yourself, “Is this meeting sitting in the right context for me?” “Am I involved in this project?” “Is this something we even do?” “Contextually, is this something we can help them with? Is this something we’re even involved?” And if it’s ‘no,’ then what you would do is you Deny the meeting. So you send an email back and say, “Hey, thanks so much for inviting us. I don’t necessarily think that we’re the right people for it but I think maybe you could talk to these people. They could really help you.” 2. The second level is Right Person. So the questions you ask yourself are, “Am I actually the right person for this meeting?” “Do I actually have the right skills to be able to contribute to this meeting?” And if the answer is ‘no,’ then you Delegate it. You delegate the meeting on to someone else who is the right person. 3. The third filter to ask yourself is Right Timing. “Is this the right timing?” “Does this fit within my timing, my week, my projects? And if it doesn’t, it might be you suggest a different time. Write back an email or have a conversation with them and suggest some different timings for the meeting. If it’s wrong timing, then you Defer it. So it’s either you deny it, you delegate it, or you defer it based on right context, right person, and right timing. To go to a meeting, all of the 3 context need to be ‘yes.’ You need to answer ‘yes’ for context, ‘yes’ for the right person, and ‘yes’ for timing. And then you send back an email and say, “Yeah. That really works great for me. Look forward to seeing you at the meeting.” So that is the Meeting Resistance Model. Today’s question: What’s been most valuable about the Meeting Resistance Model? How has this given you clarity about making a decision on whether to go to a meeting?

David teaches real solutions to the biggest – and smallest – challenges in independent restaurants. Watch this video and then take action! ************************* Video Notes on 7 Steps to a Successful Manager Meeting: Communication in restaurants is key to getting anything done, from cleaning to profitability. The big communication challenge in restaurant management is making sure you get your message across in a manner that everyone understands and can execute what you want done how you want it done. Owners tend to fail to communicate what they want done and how they want it done. As a result they express their frustration often when their managers seem to not get their job done. Then owners start to believe the only way to get anything done is to do it themselves, resulting in highly paid babysitters as managers — people to watch the restaurant, not manage. Managers have a completely different frustration. It’s their crazy-making owners who fly into the business creating a new list of things they want done, never explaining how they want it done and creating this list that can never be accomplished as fast as the owner would like. When the manager can’t execute on the owner’s expectations, the manager is told what they are doing wrong every day. The solution is to have manager meetings. ************************* A manager meeting is scheduled on a weekly basis. It’s not a five-minute tirade over what didn’t get done at closing the night before. It’s a weekly, scheduled time, set aside to review goals, expectations and challenges and then brainstorm solutions. Here are the 7 Steps to a Successful Manager Meeting 1. Plan properly and ahead of time 2. Make attendance mandatory, switching days for the meetings so the same person isn't called in on a day off over and over 3. Collect info for the meeting and create an agenda in advance 4. Stay on track - follow the agenda and don't let new topics take you off course 5. Facilitate and communicate - the owner or general manager should only be talking about 20% of the time and clear expectations must be laid out 6. Assign specific actions so progress can be reported at the next meeting 7. Take notes - assign someone to take notes and then distribute the notes to everyone These blog posts cover this information more in detail: http://therestaurantexpert.com/the-solution-to-miscommunication-in-restaurants/ http://therestaurantexpert.com/how-to-get-your-message-across-to-restaurant-management-team/ ************************* ************************* For more on this topic, visit our blog at http://bit.ly/2cbuMjp STAY IN TOUCH http://therestaurantexpert.com/free-e-newsletter/ FACEBOOK FOLLOW! http://facebook.com/therestaurantexpert SUSBCRIBE http://bit.ly/2cYOIfr

Setup shot of Odd Gunnar Skagestad, Norwegian Delegate 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Odd Gunnar Skagestad, Norwegian Delegate "We opposed a certain resolution that was called the Berlin Initiative. We don't think that was a very fortunate decision. But I don't want to elaborate on that, I just want to say that as far as Norway is concerned, we don't see that proposal or in fact any other items that have been dealt with in these meeting, as anything that will change or affect significantly Norwegian whaling policies." 6. Cutaway to auditorium 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Vassili Papastavrou, International Fund For Animal Welfare "This has been a brilliant meeting because for the first time in many years, we have been able to succeed with a really good initiative. The Berlin Initiative is actually going to be able to take the IWC forward in to the 21st century and look at all threats to whales and dolphins large and small. And this is a pretty difficult thing to come to grips with because we're going to be dealing with fisheries' problems, entanglement in fishing nets, pollution, habitat destruction, a full range of threats." 8. Cutaway to auditorium 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Masayuki Komatsu, Japanese Delegate "Minke whales and sperm whales have been more than abandoned. For example, one (M) million minkes and two (M) million sperm whales. So we are very much disappointed at the result of the Berlin meeting." 10. Various shots of Greenpeace activists carrying dead porpoise onto Hotel Estrel grounds where meeting was held 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Natalie Brandon, Greenpeace activist "Greenpeace is here to remind the IWC that what they are discussing here is a reality. The Berlin Initiative is a positive step but for it to be effective the Commission must take action." 12. Wideshot of protest STORYLINE The annual International Whaling Commission meeting ended on Thursday with an initiative to steer the world whaling body toward conservation. Wrapping up four days of meetings, a majority of the 50-member commission blocked a request to hunt 300 of the marine mammals a year and passed a proposal to set up a panel to look at improving whale protection. Frustrated by the results, Japan accused the United States of worsening a rift with pro-whaling nations and threatened to look for ways to resume commercial hunting. Norway also expressed concern about the increased power given to the International Whaling Commission and said the meeting would not change the country's whaling policies. Faced with a growing public outcry, the IWC issued a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986 because some species were endangered. Norway has ignored the ban since 1993 and Japan has threatened to pull out of the whaling body entirely. The rules have allowed Japan to catch hundreds of whales a year since 1987 in the name of research. Environmental groups hailed the non-binding resolutions, criticising Japan and Iceland for their pursuit of "scientific" whaling. Outside the conference, Greenpeace activists exhibited three porpoises as a reminder of the hundreds of thousands of marine mammals they say are killed every year. They urged the commission to do more to protect them. STORYLINE: North Korea on Thursday proposed "the comprehensive stopping of nuclear activities," according to a Chinese government spokesman. The details were "still being discussed" among the six nations meeting in the Chinese capital, he said. The offer, which could herald major progress, came a day after South Korea offered the North a conditional compensation package that officials said included energy aid for the power-starved country. The North had made a similar proposal through diplomatic channels in December, but this version, offered in the middle of delicate talks about the North''''''''s nuclear ambitions, appeared the most significant breakthrough since the Washington-Pyongyang stalemate began in October 2002. Mark, the summit will take place at 9 a.m., local time so that is 3 hours from now. We do not yet know when the two leaders will leave their hotels, located in downtown Singapore,... but with the summit venue located around 20 minutes away,... it's expected that Kim and Trump will leave sometime after 8 a.m. Now, what's interesting is that this summit,... after an initial greeting, will start off with Kim and Trump's one-on-one meeting, with only the translators with them, according to the White House. On their first meeting, the two leaders will be able to share their deep opinions. The private talk will then be followed by an expanded bilateral meeting and then a working lunch. The U.S. delegates for the expanded meeting will include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chief of Staff John Kelly and National Security Advisor John Bolton. Now, mind you, Bolton, a hardliner on Pyongyang, had infuriated North Korea a few weeks ago by pushing the so-called 'Libya model' on North Korea,... where the North is asked to give up all its nuclear weapons first. So I think Kim Jong-un and his delegates' exchanges or responses to Bolton will be something interesting to look out for. And for the working lunch, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and Ambassador Sung Kim, a former nuclear negotiator who had been at the forefront of working level talks with the North until the very last day,... will be joining Trump and Kim. And when the summit finishes, President Trump is to hold a press briefing before returning to the U.S. at around 8 in the evening. While many of the plans and details on the U.S. side have been shared through the White House Press Secretary's Office,... not much is known on North Korea. But watchers say that Kim Yong-chol, Vice Chairman of North Korea's Ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee,... and the North Korean leaders' younger sister Kim Yo-jong will certainly be among those accompanying Kim in the extended meeting. Kim, according to Reuters, is scheduled to fly back to Pyongyang at 2 in the afternoon,... that is just five hours after the start of his summit with his U.S. counterpart. So what do you think will be the main watch point for today's summit? The main deal for today's summit is whether Kim Jong-un will comply with the U.S. request of complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization or CVID,... and in exchange, will Trump give a complete, verifiable, irreversible guarantee of security, or CVIG to Kim and his regime. 10 Ways to Improve Your Time Management Skills ! Prioritize Work and Avoid Stress - Success is near

01:37
https://youtu.be/NrY7bXFQKng https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfn1uBMx7MxEN4hXRjWWvdA 1. Delegate Tasks: It is common for all of us to take more tasks than our desired potential. This can often result in stress and burnout. Delegation is not running away from your responsibilities but is an important function of management. Learn the art of delegating work to your subordinates as per their skills and abilities. 2. Prioritize Work: Before the start of the day, make a list of tasks that need your immediate attention as unimportant tasks can consume much of your precious time. Some tasks need to be completed on that day only while other unimportant tasks could be carried forward to next day. In short, prioritize your tasks to focus on those that are more important. ADVERTISING 3. Avoid Procrastination: Procrastination is one of the things that badly affect the productivity. It can result is wasting essential time and energy. It should be avoided at all costs. It could be a major problem in both your career and your personal life. 4. Schedule Tasks: Carry a planner or notebook with you and list all the tasks that come to your mind. Make a simple ‘To Do’ list before the start of the day, prioritize the tasks, and make sure that they are attainable. To better manage your time management skills, you may think of making 3 lists: work, home, and personal. 5. Avoid Stress: Stress often occurs when we accept more work than our ability. The result is that our body starts feeling tired which can affect our productivity. Instead, delegate tasks to your juniors and make sure to leave some time for relaxation. 6. Set up Deadlines: When you have a task at hand, set a realistic deadline and stick to it. Try to set a deadline few days before the task so that you can complete all those tasks that may get in the way. Challenge yourself and meet the deadline. Reward yourself for meeting a difficult challenge. 7. Avoid Multitasking: Most of us feel that multitasking is an efficient way of getting things done but the truth is that we do better when we focus and concentrate on one thing. Multitasking hampers productivity and should be avoided to improve time management skills. 8. Start Early: Most of the successful men and women have one thing in common. They start their day early as it gives them time to sit, think, and plan their day. When you get up early, you are more calm, creative, and clear-headed. As the day progresses, your energy levels starts going down which affects your productivity and you don’t perform as well. ADVERTISING 9. Take Some Breaks: Whenever you find yourself for 10-15 minutes, take a break. Too much stress can take toll on your body and affect your productivity. Take a walk, listen to some music or do some quick stretches. The best idea is to take off from work and spend time with your friends and family. 10. Learn to say No: Politely refuse to accept additional tasks if you think that you’re already overloaded with work. Take a look at your ‘To Do’ list before agreeing to take on extra work.

Differences remain at Afghan peace conference

01:41

SOUNDBITE: (Dari) Shaima Durani, jirga delegate: "As a mother and as an Afghan, my message is that I request that they (the Taliban) should agree to a ceasefire as soon as possible, come back to the country, and discuss their demands with the Afghan government. God willing, the government will agree to them, and we will achieve a long lasting peace in Afghanistan." 4. SOUNDBITE: (Dari) Haji Mohammad Leqa, jirga delegate: "We want to say to the Taliban and the Hizb-i-Islami that we do not want war in Afghanistan. We should become allies so that the foreign forces can go peacefully back to their countries." 5. Wide of news conference with Deputy Chairman of the jirga, Qiamuddin Kashaf 6. Mid of news conference panel 7. SOUNDBITE: (Pashto) Qiamuddin Kashaf, Deputy Chairman of the Jirga: "This jirga could very well be our last jirga. If we don't open the door to peace through this jirga, we may never find a bigger window to achieving peace. We will make this jirga a success." 8. Wide pan of news conference STORYLINE After two days of sometimes acrimonious debate, President Hamid Karzai on Thursday looked likely to win a national peace conference's support for his plan to invite the Taliban to negotiations to try to end Afghanistan's years of war. But delegates differed about exactly what to offer, and to whom, and when. They argued over whether the top leadership should be welcomed to the negotiating table. And some said the three-day jirga, as the conference is known, was too short to achieve a meaningful outcome. The government says it called together the 1,500 provincial, religious, tribal and other leaders from across the country to advise Karzai on what to try next to end fighting between Taliban insurgents and Afghan forces backed by US and NATO troops. Discussions meant to guide Karzai's next steps toward ending nearly nine years of war ranged from strengthening Islamic law to the role of the United Nations and the tens of thousands of NATO forces in the country, delegates said. Ethnic and political fissures opened up in committee sessions held on Thursday, the second day of the jirga, which is to end on Friday. There was general support for Karzai's desire to offer rank-and-file members of the insurgency amnesty and other incentives to lay down their arms, but delegates were split over the thornier issue of whether the government should negotiate directly with Taliban leaders. Karzai met with leaders of a Taliban-allied group, Hizb-i-Islami, last March and has repeatedly said Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar should be invited for talks if he accepts the Afghan constitution and renounces al-Qaida. The Taliban have dismissed the jirga as a "phony reconciliation process" stacked with Karzai's supporters. The Taliban insist there will be no negotiations until all foreign troops leave Afghanistan - a condition that Karzai could not accept. The militants underscored their opposition by launching a rocket and suicide bomb attack on the meeting as it opened on Wednesday. Two militants were killed and three civilians injured, but no delegates were harmed and the jirga went ahead. Qiamuddin Kashaf, the jirga's deputy chairman, said there was support for forming a new ministry or commission that could push the reconciliation process forward. He said that debate among delegates - who were split into committees of about 50 on Thursday - was sometimes fierce. "This jirga could very well be our last jirga. If we don't open the door to peace through this jirga, we may never find a bigger window to achieving peace," Kashaf said. CUBA: HAVANA: IBERO-AMERICAN SUMMIT - DELEGATES ARRIVE

03:38
Spanish/Nat European and Latin American heads of state have begun arriving in Havana amid heavy security ahead of Monday's Ibero-American summit. The summit is expected to boost Cuba's charismatic leader, Fidel Castro's international profile - and could help draw the communist country out of its isolation. The heads of state from Latin America and Europe arrived amid high ceremony at Havana's International airport. Fidel Castro himself was at the airport greeting guests with a military honour guard. Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso was one of the first dignatories to arrive on Saturday. On Sunday, many more arrived. President Alberto Fujimori received a warm welcome from the Communist leader. Meanwhile, opponents of the government held the first of several planned meetings aimed at bringing their complaints about Cuba's communist system to the world. Veteran Cuban human rights activist Elizardo Sanchez met briefly with Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Eduardo Montealegre in the Nicaraguan Embassy on Sunday morning. Sanchez, one of Cuba's best-known and respected dissidents, said he planned to meet with delegations from at least five countries. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "Never in the history of Cuba have there been these kinds of meetings between foreigners and representatives of the opposition." SUPER CAPTION: Elizardo Sanchez, Human Rights Activist Nicaraguan President Arnoldo Aleman is not attending this year's gathering, citing political differences with Castro. Aleman is an ally of one of Castro's major foes, the right-wing Cuban American National Foundation, an influential Miami-based exile group. His foreign minister said he intends to try to speak to Castro on behalf of two elderly citizens. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "There are two elderly people, Senor Ernetino Erbeu and Vincente Martinez, both older than 70. They made an official request two years ago to the old foreign minister and they have been asking the same thing of the new foreign minister... and if I have an opportunity I will ask Mr. Castro. " SUPER CAPTION: Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Eduardo Montealegre Castro has battled to shift attention from human rights to the summit itself, saying that the gathering is about Ibero-American unity, not Cuba's domestic policies. Security has been tight and scores of police have been drafted onto the streets. In all, the heads of state and government from 16 countries will gather for the summit. They will focus on international finance and the effects of economic globalisation on developing countries, especially those in Latin America. The government has been dealing swiftly with people it perceives to be a threat to the summit. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) The information that I have that there are about 15 people that have been detained. They are the subject of a process of investigation for their activities in relation to attempts to sabotage the summit." SUPER CAPTION: Alejandro Gonzalez, Foreign Ministry spokesman Over the past few weeks, the "Commandante" has said the summit should be for the people. To that effect, parties around the city have been in full swing. And despite the rallying cry from disaffected dissident groups in Cuba, Castro still appears to command support. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "What I think of the summit is what our commandante says. But it's going to be yet another blow against imperialism because we are revolutionaries. We are Cubans. And we will defend our revolution and our principles and our flag which is right here." SUPER CAPTION: Felix Gustavo Fiqueredo, Resident of Havana The summit - like the Cuban visit by Pope John Paul II in January 1998 - is a diplomatic triumph for the Western Hemisphere's only communist state. Wide of news conference 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr Saeed Jalili, chief Iranian delegate +++VOICE OF TRANSLATOR++ "As Mr ElBaradei (International Atomic Energy Agency chief) said in his last report in September for the 20th time, the agency officially announced that Iran has no kind of diversion in its peaceful nuclear activities." 13. Journalists leaving news conference STORYLINE Iran and six world powers ended a landmark meeting on Thursday with an agreement to take a new stab at overcoming years of mistrust generated by Tehran's nuclear programme and meet again this month for wide-ranging discussions on the two sides' concerns. Adding to the optimism generated by the decision to hold follow-up talks was a rare bilateral meeting between the senior US and Iranian delegates to the meeting. In addition, diplomats said Iran would open its newly disclosed nuclear plant to UN inspectors, probably within a few weeks. The encounter between the US and Iran appeared to be concrete proof of President Barack Obama's commitment to engage Iran directly on nuclear and other issues - a sharp break from the policy under the Bush administration. He will travel there soon to discuss "a number of matters," the agency said. S. Korean FM says ASEAN attendees supportive of Seoul's policies, peace efforts

02:55
강경화 장관, ARF 결산 브리핑... 신남방정책과 한반도 정세에 대한 지지얻은 기회 South Korea participated in this year's ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Singapore,... addressing its New Southern Policy and developments on the Korean Peninsula. The U.S. and North Korea exchanged warm welcomes at the security forum... but failed to find harmony over the denuclearization issue. A highly anticipated foreign ministers' meeting between the two Koreas didn't take place either. Lee Jiwon is in Singapore for the latest and filed this report. The six-day ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and Related Meetings finally came to an end on Saturday, and South Korea's foreign minister, Kang Kyung-wha,... briefed reporters on Sunday about the results of her final meetings in Singapore. Seoul's top diplomat said some of the key takeaways from her meeting was the support among participating states for the nation's New Southern Policy and for change on the Korean Peninsula. ASEAN member states promised to passionately engage in multi-dimensional cooperation with Seoul,... and together with key stakeholders in the North Korea issue, they reaffirmed the shared goal of complete denuclearization and permanent peace in the region. And though Kang did not elaborate on what she discussed Friday night with Pyongyang's foreign minister, Ri Yong-ho, when he rejected South Korea's request for bilateral talks,... she said the two did have sincere discussions during their brief encounter at the gala dinner. "We exchanged brief but honest views about developments on the Peninsula and ways to cooperate. And I think it's helped lay the groundwork for the Panmunjom Delcaration to be carried out." The chair's statement from the ASEAN Regional Forum has not yet been released,... but many are keeping a close eye on whether it will reflect North Korea's statement, in which Ri said that to move forward, Washington must take a new approach to build confidence... and implement all the points of the joint statement in a balanced, simultaneuous and phased way. Pompeo was reportedly not in his seat during the remarks at the ARF because of his schedule. And though the much anticipated sitdown between him and Ri Yong-ho did not take place either,... the atmosphere did not seem hostile at all. The two diplomats, according to Washington Post, had a small chat during the meeting,... in which Pompeo said they should talk again soon,... and Ri replied that there are many productive conversations to be had. "The U.S. delegates also delivered President Donald Trump's response to a letter he received recently from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, so there seems to be real optimism that the two sides will continue striving to work things out. SOUNDBITE (English) Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief: "We agreed to intensify dialogue in coming weeks and we expect progress in the following areas. First: there will be a second meeting before the end of October. An agenda for that meeting will be worked out through diplomatic channels and it will focus on nuclear issues, including proposals previously put forward by both sides and it will also deal with some global issues that any of the parties wish to address. Wide of news conference 12. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Dr Saeed Jalili, chief Iranian delegate "What I can say regarding this round of negotiations and comparing to last year's (negotiation) is that last year we had prepared a proposal and we were ready to continue the negotiations based on the proposal, but unfortunately it faced a pause. However I felt that today's negotiation would not face a pause and it will continue." 13. More broadly, the meeting suggested that Obama was putting his concept of US foreign policy into action, with its emphasis on negotiating even with the nations that are most hostile to the United States. He will travel there soon to discuss "a number of matters," the agency said.
