Are you stuck when you have to introduce yourself? Do you avoid introducing people because you don't know how? Don't be afraid anymore! Watch this lesson and learn what to say and do! Develop your confidence to be more successful in personal and professional life. Take the quiz on this lesson here: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-introduce-yourself-other-people/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from www.engvid.com. In this lesson, you'll learn how to introduce yourself and also how to introduce people who don't know each other. Now, sometimes, you learn a lot of English and you don't... You still feel nervous, you don't feel confident doing simple things. So, this is one of those simple, but important things, but you need to be able to do. To be able to walk up to someone, to introduce yourself, and also to know how to respond when someone does that. And that may be true, whether you're at a business conference or at a party. Okay? So, let's get started. So, here, first we'll talk about the formal situation. So, let's say we'll start over here. "Hello. I'm Bill White." Their response is: "Hi. I'm Susan Jones." So, he says, then: "It's a pleasure to meet you." And she says: "It's a pleasure to meet you, too." Okay? Pretty straightforward, pretty simple. Why? Because, especially at this part, you're just repeating what the other person says, except that you're adding the word: "too". Okay? Let's try it again. "Hello. I'm Bill White." Now, at that point, you probably want to also shake hands. So, let me mention that. So, the things that you should do in addition to what you say are these things: you should try to maintain a straight posture because you look more professional that way, especially in a business situation. In a North American context, also, we establish eye contact. All right? That shows that we're not afraid, that shows we're not hiding anything. All right? Shows confidence. And, you want to give a firm handshake. Okay? Don't keep your hand really weak. Keep it firm. Not hard. Don't squeeze the other person's hand, but make a firm handshake. And this is true whether you're a man or a woman. And usually, we smile because it's a little bit... It shows that you're a friendly person and you're happy to meet the other person, even in a business situation. So let's get started. And what I was saying is about the handshake, you could shake hands right here. So, you could say: "Hello. I'm Bill White." Or, you could say it at this point when you say: "It's a pleasure to meet you." Okay? -"Hello. I'm Bill White." -"Hi. I'm Susan Jones." -"It's a pleasure to meet you." -"It's a pleasure to meet you, too." And if you want, one thing you can do is to mention the person's name when you're saying: "It's a pleasure to meet you." Okay? But sometimes in a business context, you're not yet sure whether to say: "Ms. Jones", or: "Susan", so you could try it, and you could say: "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Jones." And she might say: "Oh, you can call me Susan. It's a pleasure to meet you, too." And so on. Okay? But main thing is this part is just repeated. Next, in an informal situation. So, here, instead of saying: "Hello", we're just going to say: -"Hi! Hi! I'm George." -"Hi! I'm Maria." -"Nice to meet you." -"Nice to meet you, too." Again, we're just repeating. So, what happened? Here, it's a little more formal, so we said: "It's a pleasure to meet you." And here, because it's informal, we just said: -"Nice to meet you." -"Nice to meet you, too." Okay? So, just repeat that. And also, instead of: "Hello", we're just saying: "Hi!" All right? -"Hi! I'm George." -"Hi! I'm Maria." -"Nice to meet you." -"Nice to meet you, too." Okay? So, try that. Next I'll show you how to introduce people who don't know each other. So, let's see how to introduce people to each other. First, we'll do this in a formal situation. Okay? So let's pretend in this scenario that there are three people. You are Carol Smith, and you know Scott Topper, and you know Steven Shaw, but they don't know each other. But you don't know that, so you have to find out first, because sometimes people do know each other. So, Carol is going to speak first. So, Carol knows both of them. All right? So she says... Carol Smith says: "Have you met each other?" So, let's say she turns to one of them or to either of them, and she says... So, Scott answers and he says: "No, we haven't." Sometimes this person will answer, sometimes both of those people will answer kind of at the same time, say: "No, we haven't." Doesn't matter. And then, Carol says, if it's a formal situation: "Mr. Topper, this is Mr. Shaw. Mr. Shaw, this is Mr. Topper." Now, sometimes this part is not necessary, because it's kind of obvious. So, usually... Usually, if you just say the first part, people will start introducing themselves then to each other or continue with the: "Pleasure to meet you." But if you want to know the traditional way in which it's done, it's done like that. Okay?

For more English at Work: http://bbc.in/29Nd9JK Anna is determined to be friendly and introduces herself to her new colleagues. Unfortunately, a slight misunderstanding leads her to make an embarrassing mistake. TRANSCRIPT Narrator: Last week, Anna got the job of sales executive at Tip Top Trading, thanks to her quick-thinking in an office crisis. Today it's her first day in the office. How are you feeling now, Anna? Anna: Excited, but a bit worried. I really want to make a good first impression. Narrator: Well, you're going to need some phrases to introduce yourself politely, such as: Hello, I don't think we've met. You must be – and say the person's name. I've just joined the team. Nice to meet you. Have you worked here long? Why don't you start by saying hello to Tom Darcy, the Senior Account Manager? Tom: (On the phone) Yah, yah, no, yah, yah, OK, yah. I'll seal the deal, yah, no worries. OK, see ya mate, bye! (Hangs up) Anna: Hello, I don't think we've met. Tom: No. Anna: You must be Tom. I'm Anna. I've just joined the team. Tom: Uh huh. Anna: Nice to meet you. Have you worked here long? Tom: Sorry, I'm quite busy right now – I've got a big deal just coming through. But let's get together sometime. Um... can you do lunch tomorrow? Anna: You want me to do lunch? Well, I'm not very - (Telephone rings) Tom: Sorry, important client. Lunch tomorrow at 12.30 then? (On the phone) Tom speaking. Yah! Frankie! So what's the latest, are we on? Anna: Well, OK then. Narrator: Great Anna! You used some nice phrases to introduce yourself. It's a shame Tom thinks he's too important to do the same. Anna: I'm sure he's just busy. But I'm a bit worried about tomorrow! (The next day…) Anna: (Struggling into the office carrying cooking implements) Good morning Paul! Paul: Good morning Anna, are you OK? Anna: Fine, the kitchen's through there, isn't it? Paul: Er, yes. (Kitchen noises as Anna starts preparing lunch) Denise: Anna! Anna: Oh hi, Denise! Denise: What are you doing? Anna: Cooking lunch for Tom. Denise: You what? Anna: Tom asked me to have lunch ready for 12.30. Denise: Did he indeed? Tom: Er, Anna. Anna: Hi Tom! Tom: What are you doing? Anna: Spring rolls, followed by crispy duck in black bean sauce. Tom: No, I mean, why are you cooking? Anna: Well, if I don't start now, it won't be ready for you by 12.30. Tom: Oh, you misunderstood me, Anna. When I said "Can you do lunch?" it didn't mean "Can you make lunch?" It meant "Are you available to come to lunch with me?" In a cafe or something. Anna: Oh! Paul: Mmm... something smells good, but what's going on here? Denise: Anna thinks it's her job to cook for people! Anna: No, no, I misunderstood! Tom: Anna just got a bit confused. Paul: Well, never mind, it looks tasty. Anna: There's enough for everyone if you want some. Paul: I think that's a splendid idea, we can have an office picnic! Anna: Yes! Paul: Mmm, that sauce looks delicious. Anna: Yes, it's my favourite. Narrator: Well, once again everything has worked out well for Anna! Before we go, a reminder of the phrases she used: Hello, I don't think we've met. You must be Tom. I've just joined the team. Nice to meet you. Have you worked here long? Just remember - if somebody says "Would you like to do lunch?" they're not usually expecting you to cook for them! Goodbye.

Watch more Business Communication videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/424452-How-to-Make-a-Business-Introduction Making a proper business introduction doesn't have to be nerve-wracking. To avoid feeling awkward, observe certain basic rules to present a poised manner that will put everyone at ease. Step 1: Introduce in order of rank Introduce the client or visitor before the boss or anyone in the office, and in order of position, instead of gender or age. In an office-hiring situation, mention the new hire first to the boss, who is mentioned second. Step 2: Shake firmly Shake hands firmly, acting congenial and accepting. Both men and women are expected to stand up to be introduced. Step 3: Use titles Use titles and last names initially, until invited to be on a first-name basis. Don't use an honorific when introducing yourself -- just your whole name. Step 4: Respond briefly Greet the person when introduced by someone else, with a brief, genuine, and relaxed "How are you doing?" or "Pleasure to meet you." Make everyone feel at ease under the circumstances with a friendly demeanor. Tip Stir up some conversation to get past the formal introduction part so that people can relax and get to know one another on their own. Step 5: Put names on the subject line Manage e-introductions, on the other hand, by putting the names of those being introduced in the e-mail subject line, explaining who is who in the body of the e-mail. Don't use vague and unprofessionally offhanded titles in the letter like "Intro." Step 6: Send it through a representative Draft the e-mail letter for an intermediary making the business introduction for you. Once they send it under their name, wait for permission to speak directly with the client once the connector secures the go-ahead. Step 7: Show you know them Convey in the body of the short letter of the e-mail what the business intention is, and indicate that you know something about their company in the first sentence. If you don't, they will rightly assume you don't care -- so neither will they. Move on to foster a good business relationship. Did You Know? Much was made of Michelle Obama returning Queen Elizabeth's embrace in their introductory meeting at Buckingham Palace in 2009, though it was acceptable as the Queen reached out first.

http://www.engvid.com/ Want to get that job? Improve your image? Sound more professional? Learn how to transform simple English words to business English vocabulary and watch your career take off! I'll show you how to change "get" to "receive", " make sure" to "ensure", "give more information" to "elaborate", and more. These small vocabulary changes will make a huge difference in your English level. Test yourself on this lesson at http://www.engvid.com/how-to-change-basic-english-into-business-english/ TRANSCRIPT: Hi. My name is Rebecca from www.engvid.com. Today, you're going to learn how to speak more professionally in business situations. Now, at times, it's all right to use informal language. It's acceptable in everyday situations. But there are times when you'll want to create a more powerful impression. And at that time, you'll want to be able to use business English. What's the difference between general English and business English? Well, sometimes, there's not very much difference. Sometimes, general English is used in business contexts. But sometimes, you use a higher-level word. And that's what I'm going to teach you in this lesson. Let's look at some really easy, common examples. For example, if you say -- or if you want to say, "I got your email", in regular English, you might just say, "I got your email." What would you say if you want to make it business English? You would say -- I'm giving you a clue. The word starts with R. Instead of saying, "I got your email"; "I received your email." Okay? Now, it becomes more formal and more business-like. Suppose you want to tell someone, "I need your help" or, "I need some help." What word could you use that starts with R instead of "need"? "Require." So instead of saying -- and you can also change more than the verb. The verb is the key, but you could say -- instead of saying, "I need some help", you could say, "I require some assistance." Now, you've changed two words, the verb and also a noun. Let's try another one. "Let's talk about it later." Which business word could you use? "Let's discuss -- let's discuss it later." That sounds much more professional than saying, "Let's talk about it later." Next one. "How do I get in touch with her?" What word could you use instead of that? "How do I contact her?" Okay? Good. "Please make sure you arrive on time." Which business word could you use instead of "make sure"? "Please ensure you arrive on time." "Please give her your travel plans." Instead of saying "give", you could say, "Please provide her with your itinerary." There, we've changed another word. Instead of saying "travel plan" or "travel plans", you could use the word "itinerary". An "itinerary" is usually a piece of paper or a document that lists your travel plans, when you're departing, when you're arriving, where, when, and so on. "Please let them know when you will be arriving." "Please let them know" -- instead of that, you could say, "Please inform them of your arrival." Okay? Good. "Please tell me why you've made this decision." "Please explain your decision." "Could you please talk some more about that subject?" "Could you please elaborate? Could you please elaborate on that." Now, this is actually a very useful word if you go to a conference or a meeting and you want someone to speak some more about a particular point or issue. It's a good, kind of, question to learn. "Could you please elaborate on that?" So "to elaborate" means to speak more or talk more, give more information. "How are you going to fix this problem?" Better than using the word "fix" is the word "solve". "How are you going to solve this problem?" All right? So try to do that for every simple word that you know and basic word that you know in general English, try to find a slightly more formal version, which will be your business English word. And use these words in an office environment. If you've found this helpful, please subscribe to my channel on YouTube. And if you'd like to do a quiz on this subject, you can also go to our website, www.engvid.com. Thanks very much. Good luck with your English.

Hello, my name's Jennifer. What's your name? Do you know how to introduce yourself in English? In today's video I'll teach you how to introduce yourself, both formally and informally. At the end, I'll teach you a bonus slang expression, that will impress every English speaker. In formal situation, you can say: Hello, my name's Jennifer. Notice the contraction, with name is. Name's. Even in formal conversations we still use contractions. Using contractions sounds a lot more natural and less robotic. You can also say: Hello, I'm Jennifer. Here I'm making a contraction with I am. I’m. And how can you ask for the other person's name. You can say: what's your name. The contraction is what is. What's. After they tell you their name, you can say: nice to meet you. Or, it's a pleasure to meet you. Here the contraction is. It is. It's. All together: Hello, I'm Jennifer. What's your name? It's a pleasure to meet you. In informal situations, you can say. Hi, I'm Jennifer. Or Hey, my name's Jennifer. Notice here that the only thing that changed was the greeting. Instead of hello, you can say hi, hey. It sounds a lot more natural. Here's a bonus slang expressions: When you're introducing yourself informally, after they tell you their name, you can say: What's up. Here the contraction is what is what's. And notice the s sound with up. Sup. What's up. #EnglishisFun, #HowToIntroduceYourselfInEnglish, #BasicEnglishCoversation2018 Please SUBSCIRBE to Jennifer YouTube Channel: Jennifer YouTube Channel: https://bit.ly/2A01Sma FREE TRAINING CLASS - Learn How to Write a Professional Email. If you are shy, you NEED to watch this! Shy people have a hard time talking in social situations. I used to be shy too, but look at me now! In today's lesson, I'll teach you to overcome your shyness! First, I will help you understand the reasons that you are shy. Then, I'll give you lots of tips on how to start a conversation. Click on today's lesson -- don't be shy! http://www.engvid.com/conversation-skills-dont-be-shy/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Ronnie. Today, I'm going to teach you something very fun and exciting and important. It's how to improve your speaking. Whether you're speaking English or whether you're doing public speaking in front of people or whether you're just speaking to a neighbor, someone on the bus, someone in a store, or a taxi driver, you might be shy. What does "shy" mean? "Shy" means you don't like -- or you're nervous -- to speak to strangers or to speak to other people. So if you are naturally a shy person, I'm sure you've heard people over and over again say, "Don't be shy! Come on. Don't be shy!" Easier said than done, isn't it, shy people? So I want to give you some tips or some pointers maybe to help you to be less shy. It's impossible to be 100 percent outgoing if you are naturally a shy person. So today's lesson is how you improve your speaking. Don't be shy! The first thing that you have to do is think about why. "Why am I shy?" There may be many different reasons. I'm just going to go through a couple of them. The number one reason, probably, if you're watching these videos, is because you are trying to speak a new language. Maybe it is English. And you are shy to make a mistake. You don't want to say something bad, funny, rude, embarrassing. You don't want your face to go red and they'll go, "Ha ha! You said a funny word!" Okay. That will happen. And you know what? Who cares? It happens all the time. I say funny things a lot, too. Another reason why you may be shy is because you "talk funny". Lots of people have different problems with their mouths. Some people have a speech impediment. Some people have a lisp, so they don't pronounce words probably like me. Maybe you have a very strange or different accent than the other people around you. People often ask me, "Ronnie, where are you from?" And I say, "Canada." And they say, "No, you're not." "Yes, I am." "But you have an accent." "Yes. I have an accent. I talk funny. Who cares? I'm from Canada. Nice to meet you." So even if you do talk funny or you do have an accent, rock with it. Yeah. You speak differently. Good. Don't be like other people. Other people are boring. This is a problem. Maybe you just don't like to talk. Okay? Maybe you are quiet. Maybe you don't want to talk to anyone ever, at all. That's cool. If you don't like people and you don't like to talk, don't force yourself to talk. Maybe you could write something. Maybe you could text message or email someone. But that's not going to improve your speaking. If you do not like to talk to people, that's your choice. But I'm trying to help you overcome your shyness. So let's go through a couple ways to actually do this. Don't be shy! Just say, "Hi!" So if you're standing at a bus stop or the subway station or anywhere, and there's another human being beside you -- let's say that you're at a bar, and there's a beautiful girl or a very handsome boy. The quickest, the easiest, and the best way to speak to someone is just to say, "Hi! My name is Ronnie." Don't use "Ronnie", though. That's my name. You have to use your name. So just say "hi" to people. If they want to speak to you, they will start the conversation. They will say, "Oh, hi. My name is --. Nice to meet you." "Oh, nice to meet you, too." Uh-oh! And then, your shyness sets in because -- "What do I say? Shoes. I have shoes. Do you have shoes? Oh, God. I'm such an idiot. I can't even speak." Maybe the other person will have asked you a person. You can always ask people basic questions, like, "Where are you from? Why do you talk funny? Why are you shy?" All those fun questions. When you're actually speaking to someone, it's really important that you choose a topic that you like. So if I were to meet someone -- "Hi. My name is Ronnie." "Hi." "Cool. So -- oh, I like music. Do you like the Sex Pistols?" "Yeah." "Me, too. Oh, my God. No way! What other kind of music to you like?" So I like to talk to people about music. The only problem is not a lot of people like the same music I do. So you have to choose a topic that you like to talk about. If you're lucky, the other person will also like the topic. The next one: Get a job. Now, this might be very strange for you to even comprehend, but I -- right here -- am shy.

Watch more How to Flirt videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/512201-How-to-Flirt-Online-Flirting-Lessons Bantering with someone online is a great way to flirt -- if you know how to do it right. In this video, our relationship experts share tips on the best way to flirt online. Rachel: Flirting online. Hunt: Got to do it. Rachel: It's an awesome forum. Hunt: Exactly. A lot of people look at it as so odd or taboo. "Well I'm not going to go online." Why not? When one more place that you can meet somebody. And of course, you're going to run into the same share of interesting people, shall we say. But if you're not there, you're not going to meet anybody there. Rachel: And that's the nice thing about, you know. There's different types of online flirtations. We can talk about email and Facebook and Twitter and online dating. In all of them, though, you have to remember that you're flirting just like you would in real life. And you have to say the right things and say it in good context. Because the biggest thing with any online flirtation is that it's typing. So, it's all black and white. There's no gray area. As opposed to in person where I can be, like, "I hate you." And it doesn't sound the same. Hunt: Right. Yep. Sarcasm is so difficult to come across. Even a sense of humor. Because if I have a dry sense of humor and I put that down and they have a playful sense of humor, they're not going to read it in that way. So, as much as humor is good one on one, you have to be very careful when you're using it only in text. Because you're never sure how it's going to be. Rachel: And also, the other thing with online flirtations is don't be so direct. You're going to find yourself "Okay so, I can't be sarcastic, I can't be funny. So what am I going to be? I'll just tell them 'Hey, you're hot.'" No, that doesn't work, either. There's a little nuance involved in online flirtation. What I suggest people to do is find something to talk about that's not a sexual-related comment. So, if you see an online dating profile and you see she loves dogs, you're like "Hey, I just wanted to reach out. I love dogs, too. How old is yours?" Or if it's on Facebook, the same thing. You can take something that they talked about and use it to flirt with them. Hunt: For guys, that's the biggest thing. When we're looking at people from Facebook and into online dating and anything. What's the first thing we do? And what's the sometimes the only thing we do? We look at the pictures. So, they're so used to just "Oh, you look so hot. Oh, you're so pretty." Don't talk about that. Take a minute and read what they've taken the time to put down. And exactly, like you said, the easiest way, comment on something that they talk about in their profiles. The easiest way to let them know that you've read, you've spent more than 30 seconds looking at them. And it lets them know that you're interested, at least, a little bit, too. Rachel: Exactly. There has to be some nugget of "I'm paying attention to what you have to say" moment. Because, like we've talked about, in real life, you can just go up and be like "Hi, my name is Rachel. So nice to meet you." You can't do that online. You have to put a little more effort into it. But you don't have to go over the top. I say two or three sentences should be the absolute max of an introduction to say "Hey, I saw your profile. I loved that you love Aruba." Or whatever it is that gives you something to tie it in, but make it something concrete instead of just "Hi, sexy." Hunt: Right. And number two is a way to allow people to get to know you online. And so many people say like "What do you like? I like camping, canoeing and being outside." I can make lists, too. It doesn't tell you what there is, but if you say "I love the solitary ability to be outside and nature." Like, "Oh, I understand now why you like it." If you like sports, say, "I like the competitive nature. I like to always have that good-natured rivalry." Let them know so that people can comment on it and say "Oh, cool. I see you like this." Rachel: Exactly. And that's the thing you have to keep in mind. Your profile or even your Facebook. If you're single and you're expecting to meet people on Facebook, what you put out there should be your initial flirtation with the public. So, it's got to give them a stepping point to talk to you. Hunt: It's that image like we were talking to, too. It's how you want the world to perceive you. If you're a stranger looking at your things, take a look at yours again and make sure somebody would find you interesting. Somebody would find you someone that they'd want to approach in real life. Rachel: Absolutely.
