Can YOU help me spread the word about how awesome electric cars are? Click 👉 EVne.ws/patreon Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 27th September edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. This is show 248 so by the end of the week we’ll be on Show 250. Every 50 shows I’ve changed things up so far, added new features or even the script at the start. If you have any comments, suggestions or feedback please email me email@example.com DAIMLER CEO RESIGNS TO MARK A NEW ERA There's a change at the top of Daimler so what does it mean for EVs? In brief Dieter Zetsche will be elected as a member of the Supervisory Board in 2021 but there has to be a two year period before then and stepping down from his current role. So Dieter Zetsche steps down as CEO to be replaced by a long term exec from their R&D which includes EVs. Tech Crunch says; "Daimler has picked Ola Källenius to head up Mercedes-Benz vehicles and Daimler, the first non-German, to hold the top spot. Källenius most recently headed up research at Daimler and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars. Källenius’s appointment comes at an interesting and potentially transformative time for the maker of Mercedes-Benz vehicles and Daimler trucks. The old business of building, financing and selling cars, trucks and SUVs has changed as automakers seeking new ways to make profits. Daimler is among those with plans to launch a series of new electric vehicles, develop autonomous vehicles and ramp up its “mobility” business, a unit that includes car-sharing and ride-hailing." https://techcrunch.com/2018/09/26/daimler-names-new-ceo-to-lead-push-into-electric-autonomous-vehicles/ MUSK BROTHER POSITIVE ON MODEL 3 DELIVERIES Kimbal Musk, he of fond persuasion to a cowboy hat, has been talking about Model 3 deliveries: “I think that if you have a Model 3, and you’d like it delivered, we could probably get it done for you by the end of this week. So if we haven’t reached out to you, reach out to us. I do know that the company is working very hard to focus on deliveries, and we want to respect all of the government processes to make sure all the T’s are crossed and I’s are dotted, and we’re doing all the right things.” Of course he's also a board member so he should know what he's talking about. Tesla has increasing taken the tack taken by those other auto makers, those who have criticised Tesla so much in the past, by making stock of common configurations without a specific buyer in mind. That's new for Tesla and is frustrating for someone who is in line, but others can come along and get a car immediately if they're willing to accept what it's in stock. VERSION 9 SOFTWARE GETS WARM REACTION On Twitter today I've seen a growing number of Tesla owners with access to the Version 9 update, with many owners posting pictures. One of the most striking is blind spot notifications and the icons used to show the location of vehicles around you. In the Model 3, trucks look like trucks, motorbikes look like motorbikes, and other cars look like, well you know! This update is a visual homogenisation for S & X with 3 firstly. By the end of this week the mass rollout should start barring any bugs. Model 3 owners also get the web browser and reports are that it's pretty snappy. Electrek says: "As we previously reported, the update includes a new ‘Drive On Nav’ Autopilot features, which brings capabilities similar to the ‘On Ramp/Off Ramp’ feature that Tesla promised with the release of Enhanced Autopilot. The Autopilot UI is also getting an update in the instrument cluster. Musk said that Tesla is finally going to release its dashcam feature using Autopilot cameras in version 9. Finally, the update also includes the promised classic Atari games that Musk said would be included as Easter eggs in the update." Tesla says about it: "“You can now record and store video footage captured by the car’s forward facing camera onto a USB flash drive. Note that you must manually add a base level folder in the flash drive called “TeslaCam” (without quotation marks) before it can be used for Dashcam. Refer to the owner’s manual for details on how to use Dashcam.” https://electrek.co/2018/09/25/tesla-release-version-9-update-week-elon-musk/ TESLA GETS PANASONIC'S HELP WITH AHEAD-OF-SCHEDULE BATTERY...

What may have started as a science fiction speculation—that perhaps the universe as we know it is a computer simulation—has become a serious line of theoretical and experimental investigation among physicists, astrophysicists, and philosophers. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, hosts and moderates a panel of experts in a lively discussion about the merits and shortcomings of this provocative and revolutionary idea. The 17th annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate took place at The American Museum of Natural History on April 5, 2016. 2016 Asimov Panelists: David Chalmers Professor of philosophy, New York University Zohreh Davoudi Theoretical physicist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology James Gates Theoretical physicist, University of Maryland Lisa Randall Theoretical physicist, Harvard University Max Tegmark Cosmologist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History. In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate — generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work — bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery. Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium. 2017 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: De-Extinction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LnAtMeSVeY&index=1&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZA3NPpBs&index=2&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2015 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Water, Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSF79uS3t04&index=3&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Selling Space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbmFeEIKBFI&index=4&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2013 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Existence of Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLz6uUuMp8&index=5&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2012 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Faster Than the Speed of Light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlLW60wOjo&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=6 2011 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Theory of Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb8_3BUHcuw&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=7 Rose Center Anniversary Isaac Asimov Debate: Is Earth Unique? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ji_GdAk9vU&index=8&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&t=25s *** Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... BRC BMW Repair Crew: HOW TO use an awesome feature of most German cars (Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, VW, and others) that may be a secret to you! I wasn't too aware of how to use this function until recently (actually thought the heat didn't work in my X5 until I found out my setting was set to cold!). Basically this video will show you how to use your center vent so you can control the temperature independently via a separate temperature damper system operated by the climate/temp knob found in the center vent in the middle of the dash. Be sure to check that you are adjusting the climate control (AC/heater) temperature knob and not an airflow knob. It should be clearly marked with red and blue colored marks or dots (for Air Conditioning or Heater) - the further on the blue setting, the colder it gets and uses exterior air, the further on red, the hotter it gets, also of note is that some like the Sclass shown have an automatic feature that will match the main climate control temperature when activated (same A/C or Heater temps). This feature is useful to stay awake on long trips by blasting cool air at you (the driver), or keeping you comfortable by heating you if the car is too cool inside. Hopefully this helps you learn a little more about your car, or one you may be purchasing!! Thanks for watching! One of the most requested features for Storage Spaces Direct was ReFS with Data Deduplication. This feature was released over a year ago, but it was only in the Semi-Annual Release which did not include support for Storage Spaces Direct. 10 Mediterranean plants you should never use in your design, and some that you should. by Eleni Tsirintani Landscape design is about satisfying human needs. It is an intervention that refers and adapts to human presence. Planting always plays an important role in the whole scheme. However, there are plants that exist harmoniously in nature, but struggle to become functional in a man-made landscape. This article focuses on those less useful plants in landscape design. It also intends to provide a set of parameters we should consider before choosing plants for a design scheme. Mediterranean Plants You Should Avoid The Invaders 1. Ailanthus altissima Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) has a very aggressive root system. It is highly invasive, because it can grow practically anywhere, even with a minimum depth of soil. The roots of this tree have been known to damage pipes, curbs and paving very easily. I cannot help but mention that I do not find it a particularly beautiful or interesting tree either. (1) 2. Yucca aloifolia Spanish Bayonet has a robust appearance and an almost sculptural quality; however it also has a very invasive root system that could destroy any type of hardscape. The tips of the leaves are pointed and sharp, which make it unsuitable for small or confined spaces, or for using adjacent to walkways. (3) The Demanding Species 3. Populus nigra ‘Italica’ The Lombardy Poplar tree presents certain advantages. The problems it could cause however, are very difficult to cope with. It is very sensitive to pests and diseases. It demands high maintenance because of its propensity to drop leaves. Lombardy Poplar branches break and fall easily, which in the wrong situation can make it dangerous for the public. The roots are highly invasive and cause severe damage to paving and other hard landscape materials. (3) The Monarchs 4. Eucalyptus globulus Eucalyptus is a special tree. It is fast growing, extremely tolerant, and it has interesting textured bark. As with most fast growing tree species, it consumes a lot of water while growing, but it can adapt to drought if necessary. Eucalyptus is also very susceptible to fire, which suggests it should be kept away from any inhabited area. There is another disadvantage. Due to their high water demand and dense shade, very few plants thrive under a Eucalyptus tree. Those that do survive are in a very poor condition. Eucalyptus is a landscape dominant tree, therefore it is hard to combine and maintain along with other plants. (4) 5. Lampranthus sp. Vygies (Lampranthus sp) is a very common groundcover plant, found mostly near the coast. It is easy to grow, salt tolerant, and spreads fast. Unfortunately, nothing else thrives where Lampranthus grows. Its dense foliage creates a thick carpet that covers everything blocking out light and thus not allowing other plants to establish. 6. Linaria dalmatica Dalmatian Toadflax (Linaria dalmatica), is usually cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is also used for medical purposes as well as in the textile industry. However, it is highly invasive and it can eliminate native species where it spreads. (5) The Poisonous Ones 7. Thevetia peruviana Thevetia looks like the exotic version of Nerium oleander. It is a beautiful and easy to grow shrub. But its fruits are not edible and in large quantities could are poisonous. Therefore, it should not be used in schemes that will be used by children. The Allergy Causing Species 8. Albizia julibrissin Albizia julibrissin is a beautiful medium sized tree. Unfortunately, it can be a potential source of allergens when in bloom during spring. Plants With a Bad Odour 9. Tulbaghia violacea & 10. Ruta graveolens Tulbaghia violacea and Ruta graveolens shrubs bloom beautifully during spring and summer and both create interesting forms in boarders and clusters. The characteristic odor they emit however makes them unsuitable for sitting areas, or small gardens. What is there to use? It may seem frustrating after excluding so many plants from our range of selection. However, there are species that would rarely fail you and they could adapt and become integrated in the landscape. Olea europaea for example, works great both in the ground or in pots. It can be either clipped or left to grow in a more natural form, and it is easily transplanted. The Olive tree is therefore easy to include in your design, if you have the right climate. My personal favorite is Pistacia terebinthus. It has special, dense foliage and a nice color. It favors cooler coastal climates. Another useful component of a professional’s palette is Cercis siliquastrum. It requires very little maintenance, as it can grow practically anywhere. However, it could provide a garden so much; color variation, sculptural form, shade, and beautiful flowers. sources: https://landarchs.com/10-mediterranean-plants-you-should-never-use-in-your-design/

It is no secret that OpenStack is continually adding security features, but it is by no means perfect -- yet. OpenStack has never really addressed security in a way that translates to a distributed model. It is one thing to stand up an OpenStack environment in a lab or a data center, very much closed and controlled environments, but it is a very different thing to build a publicly available product that has the security functionality to meet the stringent requirements needed by financial insti

Robotic systems are revolutionizing applications from transportation to health care. However, many of the characteristics that make robots ideal for future applications—such as autonomy, self-learning, and knowledge sharing—also raise concerns about the evolution of the technology. Blockchain, an emerging technology that originated in the digital currency field, shows great potential to make robotic operations more secure, autonomous, flexible, and even profitable, thereby bridging the gap between purely scientific domains and real-world applications. This symposium seeks to move beyond the classical view of robotic systems to advance our understanding about the possibilities and limitations of combining state-of-the art robotic systems with blockchain technology. If recent theory has highlighted architecture’s turn to evident resemblance and signification, we argue this tendency has also produced its other: The landscape of contemporary practice is filled with work whose motivating interests are anterior to meaning and averse to thematization; they are, in a way, pre-speech. Projects in this mode are born of the original human postulate to claim a place in the world, to confirm having been there, to make and mark a difference. “Inscriptions” is a broad survey of work that problematizes, resists, and exceeds signification by appealing to other kinds of cultural engagements, agreements, and fantasies of architecture’s origins. Important projects by Harvard University Graduate School of Design faculty spanning more than 35 years of practice are interspersed as conceptual keystones among works from emerging architects across the American academy, offering a theory of the structural relationships that bind and organize even the apparent delirium of the contemporary field.
