This calculus video tutorial explains how to find the x and y coordinates of the centroid or the center of mass of the region bounded by one or two equations. This video also explains how to find the moment about the x-axis and the moment about the y-axis using simple formulas. You need to find the area under the curve of the shaded region by evaluating the definite integral from a to b of [f(x)-g(x)]dx before you can find the location of the centroid. This video contains 2 example problems.

The Centroid of an area is the same as the center of mass for objects which have constant thickness and constant density. A general approach to solving centroid problems is to:
1) define an axis
2) Find equations of geometry
3) Choose an element of area dA
4) finding x_c and y_c and plugging them into the equations to solve the integration.
Notice that this equation has another form for composite objects (like a T - bar).
x_bar = sum(x_c_i * A_i)/A_total
y_bar = sum(y_c_i * A_i)/A_total

CALCULATION OF CENTROID
PROCEDURE TO FIND CENTROID OF COMPOSITE AREAS AND LINES
Following steps are adopted to find co-ordinates of centroid of composite figures:
1) Select suitable co-ordinate axes if not given.
2) Divide given area/lines in to different parts having known area or length and known centriodal distances.
3) Check Symmetry of Figures
(a) If section is symmetrical about x axis we can find y directly without any calculations.
(b) If section is symmetrical about y axis we can find x directly without any calculation.

In this video I go over the more general case of determining the centroid, or center of mass, of a region and this time look at the case where the region is bounded by two curves. In my earlier video I derived the centroid for the case where the region was bounded by the curve and the x-axis. The derivation that I follow in this video is very similar to that for the simpler case but the only difference now is that the rectangular subinterval has a different area and centroid. This leads to slightly different formulas but I show later on in this video that it is in fact a more general case for the simpler case, which is simply the second curve having the function g(x) = 0, which is just the x-axis! This is a great video to further reinforce your understanding of deriving integral formulas and how slightly modifying the starting parameters affects the final formulas, so make sure to watch this video!
