Watch over 50 members of the Chinatown community of Boston WALK OUT on Massachusetts Department of Transportation's fifth public meeting on Parcels 25 and 26. We’re tired of participating in your “community” process and being roundly ignored, especially when this outcome will either help us fight gentrification, or make it worse. Chinatown is besieged as it attempts to fight back constant encroachment and accelerating displacement. The redevelopment of Parcels 25 and 26 will have an enormous impact on our community for better or worse- Chinatown’s fate hangs in the balance. Yesterday evening starting at 6pm (June 30), MassDOT, along with the Boston Redevelopment Authority, held its fifth and final public meeting at the State Transportation building, where it unveiled the final guidelines and Invitation to Bid on Parcels 25 and 26. The Chinatown community has dedicated countless hours attending all five meetings and submitting oral and written comments during and after each meeting. The Chinatown community has patiently followed along with MassDOT’s public process, repeating the community’s needs time and time again. MassDOT has failed to respond in good faith and incorporate Chinatown's needs in the ITB. As a result the Chinatown community felt it had exhausted its options and was compelled to walk out en masse. Parcels 25 and 26 are a 5.5 acre site located in the Chinatown Gateway and New Economy Development areas, nestled between the Chinatown and Leather District neighborhoods. It is one of the last remaining pieces of large, publicly-owned land located, in part, in the Chinatown neighborhood. The Interstate-93 is located on it, as well as the beloved Reggie Wong Park, an anchor of the Chinatown community used by generations of volleyball players and one of only two park spaces in Chinatown. In the latest of four letters to MassDOT, crafted and signed by over twenty Chinatown organizations and individuals and submitted on June 17, the community called for affordable housing units that are truly affordable for Chinatown residents. The average household earns less than $20,000, less than 30% of area median income (AMI) in the greater Boston area. The community also called for expansion of the Reggie Wong Park to accommodate more basketball/volleyball courts, greater protections for community access on the to-be-privately-owned site, and a temporary replacement during construction. The final ITB indicates that 20% of all units should be affordable. But to the Chinatown community’s disappointment, 13% will be affordable to households earnings 70% AMI, in accordance with the city’s Inclusionary Development Policy (IDP) and out of reach for Chinatown incomes. The remaining 7% will have affordabilities ranging from 50% to 120% AMI. The average AMI of all affordable units will be 90%, meaning nearly all non-inclusionary units will also be out of reach for Chinatown incomes. As for Reggie Wong Park, although the final ITB allows for retention on-site at the same size, it did not meaningfully attempt to address our concerns regarding expansion and access. Following the presentation of the final ITB at last night’s meeting and some comments from both Chinatown and the Leather District, MassDOT failed to respond to our concerns with anything besides for silence or the occasional platitude. Without recourse, nearly all Chinatown residents and approximately three quarters of the room walked out. Representatives from the Asian Community Development Corporation, Knights Chinese Athletic Club, Chinese Progressive Association, Chinatown Community Land Trust, and Caroline Chang, the sister of the late Reggie Wong, reading a letter by Reggie Wong’s wife Deanna Wong, all expressed frustration that their constant refrains seemed to fall on deaf ears. Suzanne Lee condemned the historical mistreatment the Chinatown community has endured, noting that in 70 years Chinatown “...has lost more than half of our community to the building of the expressway and the Mass Turnpike”, and every time [the City or State] turn[s] around, they expect the Chinese community to roll over for the common good.” She then said she would take no more, inviting those who shared her frustration to walk out. This resulted in a mass exodus of over 50 Chinatown community members, including those of the above organizations as well as the Chinatown Residents Association, the Chinese Freemasons and Hurricanes Athletic Clubs, and many other Chinatown residents at-large. While walking out of the meeting, De Shang Liang shouted, “This is not a democratic process.” Xin Xing Wu, elderly resident and Steering Committee Member of Chinatown Residents Association said, “I have been coming to all of the community meetings, expressed my view and listened, but what the residents [have] said was not heard.”

On May 19th, 2014 the Orland Park Public Library Board caused a fiasco when they called the police on their critics. After asking the room for questions, Nancy Wendt Healy then claimed she needed to go into recess when a man in the audience who is an Orland Resident asked how many contractors were bidding on an announced construction project. The Board did not want the question answered and when Megan Fox demanded that the Board answer the question Healy pounded her gavel and demanded a recess. Then chaos ensued as Library Spokesman Bridget Bittman raced around the room like a lunatic to call the police. When the police got there, the "Hot Cops" showed up (attractive male police officers who were mostly Chippendales worthy). The police were stunned as they could clearly see there was no need for them to be called. The Library Board looks like fools as usual because the police declined to take any action, no arrests were made, no one was even asked to leave the room. Just more stupidity and craziness from this out of control Board.

Turn on captions for English subtitles. Alan Wilson is a British historian specialising in the origins and ancient history of the British and the history of the ancient British kings including two real King Arthurs. Arthurian research: In 1976, after a chance meeting with historical researcher, Anthony Thomas 'Baram' Blackett, at the public library in Newcastle upon Tyne, the two men decided to put up many thousands of pounds of their own money to fund full-time research into the origins of King Arthur. The Arthurian stories, so popular today, came out of South-Eastern Wales into France, via the Normans, in the 12th century and this encouraged them to start their search in the same place. The search soon moved beyond Wales to include the English Midlands which had been dominated by the old Welsh Kingdoms for centuries. To date, Wilson and Blackett have published seven books that provide information based upon Old Welsh records that date to the 12th Century. They believe that these provide a final solution to the King Arthur story and have clearly identified the true sites of the battles of Badon (Mynydd Baedan) and Camlann. In 1983, Wilson and Blackett discovered what they believe to be King Arthur's memorial stone at the small ruined church of St Peter-super-Montem on Mynydd-y-Gaer in Mid-Glamorgan, which they subsequently purchased. The stone was offered to the National Museum of Wales (Amguedda Werin Cymru) for analysis, but the offer was not taken up. Subsequently it went on public display in various venues for some time. Following this, they employed the services of two archaeologists, (Professor Eric Talbot and Alan Wishart) in 1990, to lead a dig at the same place. During the excavations, which were authorised by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, several artefacts were discovered including an ancient axe, a knife and a small cross weighing two and a half pounds, that reads "Pro Anima Artorius" ("For The Soul Of Arthur"). The cross was subsequently tested by an independent metallurgical house, Bodycote PLC, and found to be made of electrum, and so certified. The cross was offered up to the National Museum of Wales for public testing, but this also was declined.Wilson and Blackett had already identified the church as an ancient historical site possibly originally dating from the first century A.D. Other major Welsh kings are buried locally. More recently, Wilson and Blackett began a search for what was known as 'The Greatest Work of the Cymru' - Cyfrangon. This is allegedly a massive, hollow, man-made hill concealed somewhere in Wales (similar to Silbury Hill). Treasure hunters in Wales have long sought this fabled hill in which, it is believed, lie several objects of tremendous historical and archaeological value, many of which may be covered in gold or copper. The use of deep ground probing metal detection and analysis equipment revealed non ferrous metal artefacts some fifteen feet below the surface of the hill at Twyn y Glog, near Ynysybwl in mid Glamorgan. Further investigation by collaborators proved that the original height of the hill lies some 30 or more metres below the Ordnance Survey height, and that the hill is therefore an artificial construct. (Berkly, G., 2007). No further tests have been made to date (10 September 2007). Lecture tours: Alan Wilson and his colleague lectured extensively in the United Kingdom, including Manchester and Jesus College at the University of Oxford, and Alan Wilson gave the prestigious Bemis Lecture in Boston in 1993. Research into claims that the Welsh settled in mid-western America in antiquity led to Wilson and his colleague, Baram Blackett, accepting invitations from American supporters to visit US sites of historical significance in 1994. The visit led to several television appearances and the deciphering of alphabetic inscriptions claimed to be in the old 'Coelbren' alphabet. Wilson also concluded that the many snake mounds in the American Mid-west were of ancient Khumric-British construction. Whilst in America, the two men were also commissioned to produce a detailed genealogy for the Bush family (friends and supporters of President George H. W. Bush). Published works: Arthur, King of Glamorgan and Gwent (with Baram Blackett, MT Byrd Partnership, 1980) Arthur and Charter of the Kings (with Baram Blackett, MT Byrd Partnership, 1981) Arthur The War King (with Baram Blackett, MT Byrd Partnership, 1982-3) Artorius Rex Discovered (with Baram Blackett, MT Byrd Partnership, 1986) The Holy Kingdom (with Adrian Gilbert and Baram Blackett, Bantam, 1998) King Arthur Conspiracy (with Grant Berkley and Baram Blackett, Trafford, 2005) Moses in the Hieroglyphs (with Grant Berkley and Baram Blackett, Trafford, 2006) The Discovery of the Ark of the Covenant (with Grant Berkley and Baram Blackett, Trafford, 2007)

Podcast Links: Abstract: From the president down to local races, voters are activated by candidates they "know," not platforms or policy statements. For library elections or funding advocacy, your work as a librarian makes you the best kind of candidate. In advocacy, we tend to talk to the public, to funders, and to voters about our institutions. We need to instead introduce you, the professional librarians, as change-agents in your communities who are worth the funding. Biography: John Chrastka John Chrastka, founder of EveryLibrary, is a long time library trustee, supporter, and advocate. Chrastka is a former partner in AssociaDirect, a Chicago-based consultancy focused on supporting associations in membership recruitment, conference, and governance activities.
