One of over 200 Chibok girls has escaped the Islamic extremist Boko Haram. Nigerian Government officials try to claim credit for the Chibok girls freedom, but witnesses say the girl and a group of others walked out of the dense forest on their own. Aid workers and parents of the girls who were kidnapped from a school in 2014 lashed out at the Nigerian government and military Thursday for their handling of the first of the so-called Chibok girls to escape the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram. A concise history of Boko Haram, a Nigerian based militant Islamist group who identify with Wahhabist / Salafist teachings. On the 18th of May a young woman who was kidnapped by Boko Haram, an Islamist group, with 276 others, from Chibok school in Borno state in Nigeria, was found. 218 remain missing and assumed to still be captives of the group. On the 20th of May the Nigerian army rescued 97 women and children who had been abducted by the group, and initially it was thought that included a girl taken from Chibok school. It later emerged that although she had attended Chibok, she was kidnapped in a separate incident and was not part of the 276. When they were taken, on the 14th of April 2014, the story was reported internationally, and remained in the news for some time, but after there being little progress in recovering the girls taken interest seemed to die down. But now, with one girl from Chibok school free, media attention has returned – but more importantly, her liberation is likely a sign that Boko Haram is weakening. Nigerian troops say they have rescued a Chibok schoolgirl kidnapped by Boko Haram extremists more than two years ago. The troops says the girl had a 10-month-old baby boy born to a Boko Haram fighter. Last month, Nigeria's government helped secure 21 Chibok schoolgirls, in the first such release negotiated with the Boko Haram. Another girl escaped in May on her own. Thousands of other Boko Haram captives have been freed this year as the military has forced the extremists out of towns and villages in northeastern Nigeria.

Nigeria Boko Haram: Some missing girls 'rescued' after school attackSome of the schoolgirls missing after a militant attack on a boarding school in northern Nigeria have been rescued by the military, officials say.About 100 children were believed to be missing after pupils and teachers fled into bush outside the town of Dapchi during the attack.Parents told the BBC they had seen girls being taken away in trucks. The attack comes four years after Boko Haram kidnapped more than 270 girls from a school in the town of Chibok. In a statement, the Yobe state government said an unspecified number of girls had been rescued from the "terrorists who abducted them" and were now with the army.Reuters news agency quoted parents and a government official as saying that 76 girls had been rescued and at least 13 were still missingTwo girls had been found dead, Reuters said, without specifying how they had died.Yobe state officials had previously said there was no information to suggest any of the girls had been kidnapped. The secret diaries of the Chibok girls What we know about Chibok kidnappings The Nigerian town that lost its girls Dapchi is about 275km (170 miles) north-west of Chibok. The jihadists entered the town firing guns and letting off explosives, causing students and teachers to flee into the surrounding bush.Residents say that Nigeria's security forces - backed by military jets - later repelled the attack. Locals living near the school told the BBC that many of the girls who had fled had been found after hiding in surrounding villages - some up to 30km away. Yobe's police minister said that 815 of the school's 926 students had later returned to the school. The minister was speaking before news that more girls had been rescued by the military. What has happened to the Chibok girls?Last September, a group of more than 100 of the Chibok girls were reunited with their families at a party in Abuja. Most of the group were released in May as part of a controversial prisoner swap deal with the Nigerian government that saw five Boko Haram commanders released. But more than 100 schoolgirls are still being held by Boko Haram, and their whereabouts are unknown.Boko Haram militants have been fighting a long insurgency in their quest for an Islamic state in northern Nigeria. The conflict is estimated to have killed tens of thousands of people. The Chibok girls represent a fraction of the women captured by the militant group, which has kidnapped thousands during its eight-year insurgency in northern Nigeria. Why January is Boko Haram's deadliest month Who are Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamist group? Some of the 100 girls thought to have been abducted in Nigeria have been found, officials say. A schoolgirl in Nigeria confirmed to be one of the 219 Chibok girls met the President on Thursday. The girl identified as Amina Ali Darsha Nkeki was picked up on Wednesday in remote northeast Borno by soldiers working with a civilian vigilante group. She was reportedly found with her four-month old baby and a suspected Boko Haram terrorist who claimed to be her husband. The army says the husband was detained. Amina's rescue should give a boost to Buhari and possibly help locate where the other Chibok girls are. Boko Haram captured 276 girls in their night-time raid on Chibok in April 2014.

Governments of the countries present at the security summit on Nigeria and Boko Haram, in France, have agreed on an action plan to share intelligence and surveillance "in order to find those young girls," according to French President François Hollande, host of the summit. The summit has led partnering countries "to take stronger measures to eradicate" the terrorist group accused of abducting nearly 300 girls in Nigeria. Cameroon President, Paul Biya said Saturday at the summit, "We're here to declare war on Boko Haram." President Goodluck Jonathan had left the country to France on Friday to discuss fresh strategies for dealing with the security threat posed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in West and Central Africa. This trip is part of President Jonathan's attempts at securing assistance from the international community to rescue the girls and end the Boko Haram insurgency, with United States,UK,France and Israel already offering a helping hand. Speaking at the Summit, President Hollande had confirmed that the sect is a threat to West and Central Africa and alleged that the group has links to other militants including al-Qaeda's North African arm.
