Restoring Ideals: Girls Rock Philly
Funded by The Barra Foundation, Restoring Ideals began as a question raised byTemple Contemporary's Advisory Council that addressed Philadelphia's evolving relationship to its founding ideals of tolerance, equality, and independence. Inspired by this question, Temple Contemporary (the gallery at Tyler School of Art) and a consortium of partners including the Conservation Center of Art and Historic Artifacts and WHYY, responded by designing the Restoring Ideals project. It is our hope to open a dialog that refers to the honorable declarations of the past, as well as connecting these ideals to the needs of Philadelphia's living communities and the organizations that serve them. Girls Rock Philly is a volunteer-based music organization dedicated to empower girls through music. Girls Rock Philly began in the fall of 2006 simply by wanted to make more space for girls in the music scene. Now they've grown to provide a week-long summer camp, a drop-in program, and an after school program for girls. Girls Rock Philly believe that by picking up a musical instrument, we can give girls the confidence and leadership skills to succeed in anything they believe in. Suspect Charged In Connection With Murder Of Philadelphia Art School Graduate
A neighbor is being charged with the gruesome murder of a young woman whose body was found early Monday morning dumped in a vacant lot in Kensington. Police say the suspect, 22-year-old Jeremiah Jakson, lived in a room in the same Mantua boarding house as victim Laura Araujo. They say he is no stranger to police and has a long rap sheet of prior arrests. Investigators think Jakson was burglarizing Araujo's room before he killed her. Police also say he reportedly beat her while trying to get her to reveal the PIN number of her bank account. Araujo's duct-tape-bound body was found by a trash picker in Kensington around dawn Monday, in a duffel bag in a vacant lot, most of her worldly possessions strewn nearby. Her car had been set ablaze earlier in that morning in South Philadelphia. According to police, Jakson apparently burned himself while torching the car. They say that when he went for treatment to a local hospital, medical personnel contacted police and he was connected with the crimes. Using recent technology, Jakson's alleged confession was recorded on video at the homicide headquarters and may now be played in court if the case goes to trial. Four Seasons Pop Down Makes Waves in Miami Aboard KISMET Superyacht
Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts unveiled the latest #FourSeasonsPopDown on December 7, 2018, hosting a one-night-only event against the backdrop of Miami’s annual celebration of art. The exclusive soiree took place on board custom designed superyacht KISMET for the brand’s signature play on a pop up, aimed at transforming unexpected locations beyond the walls of its hotels and resorts. A guest list of international media, influencers, VIPs and celebrities were greeted by artistry at every turn, as an international roster of 16 Four Seasons mixologists, chefs and pastry chefs from across the globe served up show stopping delights. While exploring the 95 metre (312 foot) superyacht, guests enjoyed custom culinary and beverage creations developed by each craftsperson, dished out in interactive and unexpected ways from stations situated throughout. Guests sipped on handcrafted cocktails created specifically for Pop Down Miami from master mixologists Fatima León of Four Seasons Hotel Mexico City, Melissa Hart of Four Seasons Hotel Toronto, Keith Motsi of Four Seasons Hotel Beijing, Ashish Sharma of Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Valentino Longo of Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside, Florida, Jeisson Caro of Four Seasons Hotel Bogota and Karen Arceyuth of Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo. Chefs serving up gourmet savoury dishes included Michelin-starred Chef Daniel Boulud of Café Boulud and d|bar at Four Seasons Hotel Toronto and Michelin-starred Chef Mauro Colagreco, Chef Collaborator, Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, as well as Chefs Aaron Brooks of Four Seasons Hotel Miami and Antonio Mermolia of Le Sirenuse Miami at Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club, Surfside, Florida. Artfully crafted desserts were also on offer from pastry chef to the stars Chris Ford of Beverly Wilshire, Beverly Hills (A Four Seasons Hotel), Pastry Chefs Rabii Saber of Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort, Angel Betancourt of The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Bahamas, Nicolas Lambert of Four Seasons Hotel Lion Palace St. Petersburg and Diogo Lopes of Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon. On the lower deck spa level, guests were treated to an immersive sensorial experience and customised perfumes from French Maison De Parfum Atelier Cologne while surrounded by citrus trees. NetJets continued its collaboration with Four Seasons, hosting a lounge on KISMET’s top deck, where guests could sit back and take in views of Miami’s skyline while sipping on gin cocktails and tasting delicacies from the yacht’s open-fire grill. Two-storey video walls displayed the works of Barcelona-born artist Ignasi Monreal, whose digital paintings are featured in Four Seasons: The Art of Hospitality, the brand’s newly launched coffee table book from Assouline Publishing inspired by the people of Four Seasons. The invitation-only experience was executed by event partner Coco & Cowe and featured a special DJ set by Questlove. Those passing through Island Gardens Marina were also met by Glass Horizon, the latest Skynet installation from artist Patrick Shearn and studio Poetic Kinetics, presented by Four Seasons. Shimmering 11 metres (35 feet) high, the captivating work of art was constructed using rope, monofilament net and approximately 67,000 holographic Mylar streamers spanning 10,800 square feet (3,292 square metres). Designed to mimic the movement of nature, art lovers and onlookers were invited to take in the must-see public installation, capturing it and sharing it on social media using #FourSeasonsPopDown and #GlassHorizon. On event day, the installation reflected a full spectrum of colour as it cascaded overhead, leading the way to the impressive venue. The latest Pop Down comes just six weeks after Four Seasons transformed a former high school into a surreal rooftop garden in Philadelphia’s Passyunk neighbourhood after launching Four Seasons Pop Down in Toronto in 2017 during the city’s international film festival, with plans to bring the global event series to Hong Kong in early 2019. Philadelphia Schools on Talk Philly
http://www.empire.edu/cosmetology-schools/pennsylvania CBS 3 in Philadelphia recently had Empire student, Chrissy Lewis, and Empire PR manager, Maureen Pinchock come into their studio. They wanted to sit down and talk to the girls about the recent contest held by their sister company, The CW Philly. The CW asked Empire students to take women's natural beauty and add some extra spice in a makeover. The winner was chosen by an online vote of the best before and after photos. Chrissy was the winner after totally transforming her client. Chrissy says that she cut off at least 6 inches of her client's hair. She used an inverted bob so that there was still plenty of hair around the client's face and added lots of highlights. The finishing touch was to add some makeup. The hosts asks Chrissy how she knew what haircut to give her client. She says she used the shape of her client's face to determine the haircut that would look best. She thought the inverted bob would really compliment her clients natural look. Maureen is asked how one knows if he or she is cut out for the beauty industry. Maureen says that students have a passion for beauty to begin with, but they also research. For example, Chrissy would check things out online and pay attention to fashion week events. She's always familiar with the latest trends. The host asks Maureen if there are a lot of people interested in a cosmetology career these days. Maureen says that they certainly are. "It can't be outsourced" because it's a service-based job. It's also very hands-on. The students are passionate about it and go on to do everything from photo shoots to owning salons. "The career possibilities are endless," she says. Maureen is asked about Empire Gives Back. Maureen explains that every Empire school adopts a women's shelter and do annual fundraising as well as different complementary services. For example, the Philadelphia school adopted Women Against Abuse, the largest women's shelter in the area. The schools have raised almost a half a million dollars over the years. The program is meant to raise money for the shelters and to give those in need an emotional boost by performing beauty services for them.

Modern Times: Camille Paglia & Jordan B Peterson
Dr. Camille Paglia is a well-known American intellectual and social critic. She has been a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (where this discussion took place) since 1984. She is the author of seven books focusing on literature, visual art, music, and film history, among other topics. The most well-known of these is Sexual Personae (http://amzn.to/2xVGEEV), an expansion of her highly original doctoral thesis at Yale. The newest, Free Women, Free Men: Sex, Gender, Feminism, was published by Pantheon Books in March 2017 (http://amzn.to/2hGycTG). Dr. Paglia has been warning about the decline and corruption of the modern humanities for decades, and she is a serious critic of the postmodern ethos that currently dominates much of academia. Although she is a committed equity feminist, she firmly opposes the victim/oppressor narrative that dominates much of modern American and British feminism. In this wide-ranging discussion, we cover (among other topics) the pernicious influence of the French intellectuals of the 1970's on the American academy, the symbolic utility of religious tradition, the tendency toward intellectual conformity and linguistic camouflage among university careerists, the under-utilization of Carl Jung and his student, Erich Neumann, in literary criticism and the study of the humanities, and the demolition of the traditional roles and identity of men and women in the West. A Facebook page is maintained for Dr. Paglia by Pantheon at Penguin Random House in New York: https://www.facebook.com/CamillePagliaAuthor Relevant Links: JB Peterson Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/jordanbpeterson Self Authoring: http://selfauthoring.com/ NEW: BFAS Personality Assessment: http://www.understandmyself.com Jordan Peterson Website: http://jordanbpeterson.com/ Podcast: http://jordanbpeterson.com/jordan-b-p... Is Philadelphia's Leading Philanthropy Back on Track?
For nearly 70 years, the William Penn Foundation has been a philanthropic giant in the Philadelphia area, leading efforts in the arts, environment and education. While the foundation is largely seen as an effective institution, recent changes in leadership and strategy have challenged the foundation's values of transparency and equity. The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy conducted a comprehensive assessment of the William Penn Foundation as part of its new Philamplify project. Mural Arts: Common Threads Restoration
Standing tall throughout the years, Common Threads, remains one of our most popular murals. When it was originally painted by Meg Saligman in 1998, and was Mural Arts' largest and most expensive mural. On a typical weekday, 5,800 people pass by Common Threads while entering or exiting the SEPTA stop at Broad and Spring Garden Streets. Rising eight stories from the corner of the busy downtown intersection at Broad and Spring Garden Street, Common Threads is visible from blocks away, its striking composition and massive figures beckoning drivers and walkers alike to venture closer. "Common Threads represents, for me, everything that is wonderful about murals," says Jane Golden, Executive Director. "We see Meg's uncanny ability to create a mural that is evocative, that stirs our senses, and that brings alive contemporary issues in a way that is both aesthetically appealing and compelling."
Interview with Evangelos Frudakis
Philadelphia, PA - His journey as an artist has been life-long. From the age of 8, he recalls his first visit to Greece in 1929 on a ship that took days to cross the Atlantic. “I remember drawing human figures constantly on that journey. I knew even then I was going to be an artist,” says Evangelos Frudakis. At the age of 93, Frudakis is a sculptor who has traveled his own path and is one of America’s most significant twentieth-century sculptors. Frudakis’ best known works are his national monuments, including, The Signer, exhibited outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia, and The Minuteman, at the National Guard Building in Washington, DC, which is also the official logo for the U.S. National Guard. His exquisite over-life-size female nude (see Gallery section of this site) Reaching is displayed in the Brookgreen Gardens Sculpture Museum, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Other major pieces are located in the Philadelphia Zoo and Civic Center. His stunning bronze fountain, Icarus and Daedalus, created in 1967, is found at the Central Arkansas Library, in Little Rock, Arkansas. A renowned mentor, he owned and operated the Frudakis Academy of Fine Arts, a workshop in Philadelphia for many years and is responsible for teaching many of the finest sculptors in America, who are now coming of age. Frudakis’ portrait sculptures are too many to list, but they include President John F. Kennedy. His numerous awards include the prestigious Prix de Rome and the Herbert Adam’s Award (National Sculpture Society). Affiliations include: National Academician, Fellow; American Academy in Rome, Fellow; and, National Sculpture Society, and he is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. Just two years ago, at the age of 90, Frudakis was awarded the prestigious Medal of Honor–for lifetime achievement–by the National Sculpture Society. With only one winner each year–since 1929–this significant and celebrated award is analogous to the Academy Award for sculptors. Between the 1890’s and early twentieth century, intense active Greek labor agents brought thousands of Greeks to the Salt Lake City region for work in the mines. This was the beginning of the Greeks that journeyed to the American west. Frudakis’ father, Vasilis, was part of these patriotis that arrived and he immigrated to the United States in 1910, from Ali Kambos near Knossos, Crete, Greece, and settled and worked in the coal mines around Reins, Utah. From a photograph of a young girl from Crete, showed to his father by a friend, the young Vasilis picked out his future bride, Christina. The couple was soon married and Frudakis was born in 1921. He recalls life as being hard on his family. Greeks migrated back and forth, from Wyoming to Utah, for the work in the mines and railways, but art, and love of music, was in the blood of the Frudakis family. His father would play the Cretan Lyra when friends and family gathered for social affairs. Their roots of Hellenic traditions and customs from their homeland were deeply imbedded. Even without a church, a traveling priest would visit a household where the community would gather for Sunday service. After a second attempt at making a living in Greece, the family returned and settled in New York City, where Frudakis started his art education. Growing up in the tough streets of Hell’s Kitchen, he found himself constantly getting into fights with other kids. His midwestern upbringing and love of the arts alienated him from his street-tough peers but also opened the door to his future. A transfer to an all-boys school got him noticed for his artistic abilities. Eventually this led to teaching at the National Academy of Design, the second oldest art school in the country. There, he was considered a premier teacher of sculpture in New York City at the time. His teaching at the Academy was followed by a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he entered in 1941, for a short time. World War II and the draft took him to Europe where he served for two years, before returning to finish his scholarship. He later moved to Rome with his first wife, Virginia Parker, in 1950 after winning the Prix de Rome for sculpture. He settled back in Philadelphia, where in 1975, he taught and hosted his own workshops throughout the years. Today, Frudakis continues to create and follow a path of expression as he has done from the beginning as an artist. Frudakis stated, of his life as a sculptor: “When you look at my work, you sense a feeling of appreciation for the beauty and the truth, thats in that work. Because I admire and respect nature. But far beyond, theres poetry that you try to arrive to, concept that comes from the heart, thats what you try to get into your work….so that it inspires people, and makes them feel good."
